Akon asked to co-ordinate the World Cup anthem for the upcoming competition

Akon has revealed he has been asked to co-ordinate the World Cup anthem for the upcoming competition.

The 19th FIFA World Cup will take place between June and July 2010 in South Africa and the Senegalese singer has admitted he has been asked to help with the anthem.

He said: "I've been hired as musical director for the World Cup.

"I will be overseeing the World Cup anthem and music at the ceremonies and I'm off to South Africa this week for meetings."

He added to British newspaper the Daily Mirror: "I love football so it's a great honour. Chelsea is my team in the UK, but I'll support South Africa in the Cup."

He added: "I know David [Beckham], he's my man. But I'm not asking for his advice. Footballers should stick to football."
