Avril Lavigne split up with her husband because she is "too young" to settle down, sources claim.

The Complicated singer wed Sum 41 rocker Deryck Whibley in 2006 when she was just 21. But the pair announced last week they had separated.

An insider revealed: "She married too young and she finally realised that.

"Avril realised she needs her own life and needs to explore things without him."

Meanwhile, another insider claimed that the pair had been having trouble for six months but added that the split is "not about Deryck wanting a kid, nor is she dating anyone else".

It follows reports that she spent the summer partying with socialite bachelor Brandon Davis in St Tropez.

A source said: "She was seen downing shots, drinking booze from the bottle and play-fighting men on the beach. She wasn't acting like a married woman at all."

In a statement revealing the split last week, Avril wrote: "He is the most amazing person I know, and I love him with all my heart. Deryck and I are separating and moving forward on a positive note."

Whibley has written and produced tracks on her new album, due to hit stores in November.
