Billy Bob Thornton talks about his Canadian radio interview meltdown on Jimmy Kimmel Live!

Billy Bob Thornton hit back at claims that he had a 'meltdown' in an interview on Canadian radio.

The actor-turned-musician defended his response to Studio Q interviewer Jian Ghomeshi's questioning on The Jimmy Kimmel Live!, claiming his reaction was nothing out of the ordinary.

Thornton, 53, who was on the radio show to promote his band, The Boxmasters, told Kimmel that he had a deal with the show's producers not to talk about his film career during the show.

"First of all, I do that all the time - it is not the first time," he said, "I was doing a show in Germany, we were touring there about 10 years ago with my first solo record and this women was told, 'Don't say this, don't say that,' which you have the right to do. If they look you in the eye and say we promise, then that is the deal. And this woman said something she was not supposed to say and I told her I receive signals from Venus through a metal plate in my head."

The Oscar-winning star told Kimmel that what shocked him the most was that the on-air exchange caused such a sensation.

He said: "Well, first off, all the fact that that was news was astounding to me. But it gave humpback geeks something to do for a couple of days."

He added that he was amazed that the resulting furore overshadowed the 'real' news.

"If the captain from the pirate abduction had been rescued that day, no one would know anything about it," said the star.

Thornton, who was married to Angelina Jolie from 2000 until 2003, revealed he has been inundated with calls from worried friends since the incident.
