Jay-Z tells of scars left by his dad's walk-out

Jay-Z has opened up about his dad walking out on him as an 11-year-old in an emotional new interview.


The music mogul went back to Marcy Projects - the poor Brooklyn neighbourhood he grew up in - as he talked about his childhood, his success in the business world and his relationship with wife Beyonce.


Jay-Z, born Shawn Corey Carter, told Oprah Winfrey his father's desertion left a deep mark on his life.


“Your father is like your hero,” the 39-year-old rapper said. “That's someone I was in love with, that is my world. I wanted to be like him, walk like him and talk like him.


“So for that to be removed, for him to leave my house, my life, left a huge void in my life and also made me put up walls.


“Because I never wanted to feel that again, I never wanted anyone to get that close to me so I could feel like that again.”


He said his mother arranged a meeting for them when he was older and, after not showing up previous times, his dad finally came and they put everything right.


He said: “I got a chance to really tell him everything that that was on my mind. How I felt, how him leaving made me feel and, you know, we dealt with it.”
