Jury watches tape of alleged blackmail attempt in Travolta case

The jury in the extortion trial involving John Travolta watched a video of a lawyer for the star and a former Bahamas senator discussing an alleged blackmail attempt.

The tape was taken by police via a hidden camera. It reportedly showed the fomer senator, Pleasant Bridgewater, trying to exact at least $20million from Travolta through the lawyer.

Bridgewater claims in the footage to have in her possession a document from paramedic Tarino Lightbourne that she threatens to make public. The document was a release from duty of care statement Travolta signed when his son was to be transported after suffering a cardiac arrest in the Bahamas on January 2. The boy, Jett, 16, later died.

Lightbourne came to Travolta's vacation home on Grand Bahama Island when the actor's 16-year-old son Jett, who was autistic and suffered regular seizures, died on January 2.

Bahamas police set up hidden cameras in a hotel room to capture Bridgewater's meeting with Travolta's lawyer, Michael McDermott on January 19.

Bridgewater calls Lightbourne on her mobile phone in the video to tell him $250,000 was the offer. She tells the lawyer Lightbourne responded by telling her she couldn't handle the deal. He told her: "My mortgage is more than that."

The two defendants allegedly agreed to $10million to be paid in installments over four years before police arrested them.
