Kate Winslet to reprise Mildred Pierce for television

Kate Winslet, riding the wave of her recent movie awards, will star in a television mini-series of Mildred Pierce.


The star will play a bored housewife who makes a foray into the restaurant business. The story of Mildred Pierce was famously told by an unforgettable Joan Crawford in 1945. And Crawford was rewarded with an Oscar for her performance.


The part sounds like a natural progression from Winslet's two recent roles in The Reader and Revolutionary Road.


Mildred Pierce is a novel by James M Cain. Todd Haynes, who has mined the worlds of trapped women in movies such as Far From Heaven, will write and direct the mini-series which is yet to find a buyer. HBO is said to be ahead of the pack in potential sponsors.
