Rihanna claims her TV tell-all is 'helping save lives'

Brave Rihanna insists that her decision to open up about her attack at the hands of ex-love Chris Brown is 'actually helping save lives'.

The singer told TV host Alexa Chung that a motivation for deciding to finally talk about the abuse nightmare was to try to finally put it behind her.

But the star - who came out onstage throwing a punch - proudly insisted that it also had a profoundly positive influence on helping other young women who were victims of domestic abuse.

The star insisted she wanted to help: "Give insight to young women who are going through, or have been through, the same thing that I have.

"There's the national domestic violence hotline and the calls went up by 59 percent and the helpline geared towards teenagers went up 73 percent since the interview.

"So while people are busy giving negative feedback and making up stories it's actually helping save lives. So look at the positive."

The serious stuff covered, Alexa and Rihanna spent most of the rest of the interview talking about Rihanna's other passion - fashion.

The star admitted there are few things she would not put herself through to look good.

"Nothing I wear is comfortable - except my underwear," she laughed. "I have to make sure I'm alright there.

"But the shoes, the clothes - pretty uncomfortable. It's all in the name of fashion."

The singer showed off her new tattoo on her hand, a traditional Maori design that represents strength and love and also admitted the inspiration for wearing an eye patch: "Definitely love Pirates of the Caribbean..."

Aside from fashion, she said she relaxes through her "guilty pleasure - reality TV".

"I just really like TV," she admitted shyly.
