Steve Martin and Alec Baldwin to host the Academy Awards

Actor Alec Baldwin and comedian Steve Martin will co-host the 82nd Academy Awards (aka the Oscars) next March, according to reports.

Martin has hosted the ceremony twice before - and was nominated for an Emmy for hosting the 73rd Academy Awards - but this will be Baldwin's debut as a co-host, although he was a presenter at the 2004 Oscars.

The event will be held on 7 March, at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood.

A joint statement from the producers at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, said: "We think the team of Steve and Alec are the perfect pair of hosts for the Oscars.

"Steve will bring the experience of having hosted the show in the past, and Alec will be a completely fresh personality for this event."

After the statement was released, Martin and Baldwin wasted no time in trading barbs.

"I am happy to co-host the Oscars with my enemy Alec Baldwin," Martin said.

Baldwin countered: "I don't play the banjo, but I'm thrilled to be hosting the Oscars - it's the opportunity of a lifetime."

Martin and his banjo are currently on a tour with bluegrass band, Steep Canyon Rangers.

Baldwin, who stars in the award-winning NBC comedy 30 Rock, was nominated for an Oscar in 2003, for his role in The Cooler.
