Travolta case: Bahamas judge declares mistrial

A Bahamanian judge has declared a mistrial in the case of two people accused of trying to extort money from John Travolta, ordering a retrial at a later date.

Justice Anita Allen declared the mistrial after a televised speech by a politician appeared to be an improper leak from the jury room.

"The dilemma that we face is great. I am erring on the side of caution. Justice must be transparent," Allen said.

Paramedic Tarino Lightbourne and politician Pleasant Bridgewater, pictured, are accused of trying to extort $25 million from the actor over documents relating to Lightbourne's transport of his son, Jett, who died in January while the family was on vacation.

Jurors were out deliberating when lawmaker Picewell Forbes told an audience at a Progressive Liberal Party convention that Bridgewater was "a free woman" - leading the judge to her decision.
