9 Crimes Lyrics

Damien Rice

Leave me out with the waste This is not what I do It's the wrong kind of place To be thinking of you
It's the wrong time For somebody new It's a small crime And I got no excuse
And is that alright? Yeah Give my gun away when it's loaded That alright? Yeah If you don't shoot it how am I supposed to hold it?
That alright? Yeah Give my gun away when it's loaded That alright? Yeah, with you?
Leave me out with the waste This is not what I do It's the wrong kind of place To be cheating on you
It's the wrong time She's pulling me through It's a small crime And I got no excuse
And is that alright? Yeah To give my gun away when it's loaded (Is that alright with you?) Is that alright? Yeah If you don't shoot it how am I supposed to hold it? (Is that alright with you?)
Is that alright? Yeah If I give my gun away when it's loaded (Is that alright with you?) Is that alright Is that alright with you?
That alright? Yeah If I give my gun away when it's loaded (Is that alright with you?) Is that alright? Yeah You don't shoot it how am I supposed to hold it? (Is that alright with you?)
Is that alright? Yeah If I give my gun away when it's loaded (Is that alright with you?) Is that alright Is that alright with you?
And is that alright? Yeah (To give my gun away when it's loaded) Is that alright? Yeah (You don't shoot it how am I supposed to hold it?)
Is that alright? Yeah (To give my gun away when it's loaded) Is that alright? Is that alright? Is that alright with you? No

I think the person in this song is in love but has found someone new, "its the wrong time of place to be thinking of you" shows he still cares but feels guilty about the situation he is in. "Its the wrong time for somebody new" means he is torn between these two relationships and the thought of cheating is a small crime but theres no excuse.

The gun symbolizes the relationship. All this guilt is weighing on him. The weight of his relationship is to much for him to hold onto but he cant make up his mind so he's asking his original love to shoot his gun, releasing him "the bullet" from the burden of their relationship.

"Give my gun away while its loaded" His relationship is still in tact but he's trying to give it away because he cant hold on.

Once she shoots it he is released and free of guilt

I tried to say my interpretation the best i could. This is a great song

I take it back he is the gun wants her to end the relationship by shooting it and releasing herself "the bullet" so that he can start over with someone new and reload his gun

I don`t know exactly what all the lyrics mean (like all songs its what you take from it) ,but I always think of a certain someone when listening to this.......... :/

I think it's about someone loving someone else so much, to the point where it hurts. I think when he says give my gun away when it's loaded, he means I just can't handle this relationship, this love. Sometimes there is love in life which is just so much, it 's not healthy. Maybe the person in this song felt this love and when the person they loved couldn't understand, or feel the same, they felt the need to end it all, but didn't know how to gone on. Is that alright?- they need confirmation, they need to know they aren't on their own with how they feel. Leave me out with the waste, it's the wrong kind of place to be cheating on you- maybe not physically cheating, but cheating on their relationship, having doubts, not able to cope with the burden that their love has become. He feels guilty for this, and thus the is that alright?- the need for the guilty party, no matter what their crime was, to have confirmation that they're forgiven, understood. I guess the real beauty of the song is that it's open to interpretation. You get from it what you need to get. Like what you get from love.

"If you don't shoot it how am I supposed to hold it." this part means if he is not able to kill "shoot" her in his heart how is she supposed to hold it if he cant neither her... Sad story..

I think these lyrics were written from the perspective of a man trying to move on from a broken relationship. He stills attached to the girl and feels bad for trying to move on to someone new and sleeping with someone he doesn't really love. The only part I'm not able to fully make sense of is "If you don't shoot it how am I supposed to hold it." I was taking the fun to mean his... male parts... and I guess it could still fit there... or in that stanza the gun could take on a second meaning as in if the ex doesn't love him back why should he refrain? How long should he wait?

And I did like how someone thought the 9 reference could be in correlation with the 9th commandment. Perhaps his ex is married to someone and they're having secret trist and he feels so guilty about it.

Throw me away (ask for break up), because if it is me, i couldnt leave you. if you dont shoot using the gun, how can i hold it so that i can be framed as the shooter for you? she caught him cheating but she is still thinking of him and trying to pull him through. its the wrong time and place for still loving/to still be loved, but if only the other person would shoot the gun at himself/herself (asking breaking up), he/she is willing to hold the gun afterwards (be blame for the other person wanting to break up) ... and .. is that alright with you?

@lilygtzv9 -- I love your interpretation, and agree with it fully. I also wanted to add that "It's a small crime/and I got no excuse" could mean that he's not THAT in love with this other person. The reason he's leaving her is because she's completely ignoring his love and his heart "you don't shoot it how am I supposed to hold it?" So he can't let his love disappear, so instead he's going "to give [his] gun away when loaded" -- when he already has the love in his heart. I'm trying to figure out the significance of the number 9 -- perhaps it means he has cheated 9 times (small crime) -- also "Give my gun away when it's loaded" is 9 syllables (the only line(s) in the song that's 9 syllables).
