Aaliyah Biography

Aaliyah Dana Haughton was born January 16, 1979 in Detroit, Michigan. She was a singer, actress and model. She appeared on Star Search at a young age, then when she was only 12 was signed to Jive Records, where she met R.Kelly who mentored her through her musical career.
She later left Jive Records and signed with Atlantic Records, where she worked with big names such as Timbaland and Missy Elliott.

In 2001, Aaliyah dropped her final album �Aaliyah�. On August 25, 2001, while in the Bahamas filming for the music video �Rock the Boat�, her and 8 others were killed in a plane crash. The pilot operating the airplane was not licensed to and was found to have cocaine and alcohol in his system. Later, her family filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Airway.

Aaliyah was nominated for 5 Grammy awards, and won awards such as Best Female Video, and Outstand Female Artist. Aaliyah has been named the �Queen of Urban Pop.�
