A Dustland fairytale beginning
Or just another white trash county kiss
In '61, long brown hair and foolish eyes

He looked just like you'd want him to
Some kind of slick chrome American Prince
A blue jean serenade and moon river, what you do to me
And I don't believe you

Saw Cinderella in a party dress
But she was looking for a nightgown
I saw the devil wrapping up his hands
He's getting ready for the showdown

I saw the minute that I turned away
I got my money on a palm tonight

Change came in disguise of revelation, set his soul on fire
She says she always knew he'd come around
And the decades disappear like sinking ships
But we persevere, God gives us hope
But we still fear what we don't know

The mind is poison
Castles in the sky sit stranded, vandalized
A drawbridge is closin'

Saw Cinderella in a party dress
But she was looking for a nightgown
I saw the devil wrapping up his hands
He's getting ready for the showdown

I saw the ending when they turned the page
I took my money and I ran away
Straight to the valley of the great divide

Out where the dreams are high
Out where the wind don't blow
Out here, the good girls die
And the sky won't snow

Out here the birds don't sing
Out here the fields don't grow
Out here the bell don't ring
Out here the bell don't ring
Out here the good girls die

Now Cinderella, don't you go to sleep
It's such a bitter form of refuge
Oh, don't you know, the kingdom's under siege
And everybody needs you

Is there still magic in the midnight sun
Or did you leave it back in '61?
In the cadence of a young man's eyes
I wouldn't dream so high

i think its my favorite son in the whole album. Love it. The build up at the end when he's pleading to his mother not to abandon them gets me every time.

    Thank you, Brandon. Beautiful song.

It is about a woman dying, and she has been in love with the same 'slick chrome american prince' since the day they parted ways in '61 I'm ****uming to go to Vietnam War. And he never came back but she always waited for him. Now she is dying and going to meet him.

Actually that's wrong. It's about Brandon Flower's (the lead) mother who is dying from cancer. His father left him at a young age and now he is left. 1961 is the year his parents met in a trailer park and he "swept Cinderella" off her feet and then dumped her. - "Slick chrome american prince"
The lyrics "now cinderella don't you go to sleep (die)/ it's such a bitter form of refuge/ oh don't you know the kingdom (family) is under seige/ and everybody needs you" make more sense now. Also "out here the bell don't ring" refers to the funeral bell tolling. Party dress=life, nightgown= sleep of death. Now the father is coming back around - the cancer made him wake up - "decades disappear"
It's actually a really sad song, but it is by far my favorite of all time.

Are the lyrics 'where the dreams roll high' or 'where the dreams all hide' ??? I love this song, one of my fave off the album.

The song's about his mum and dad who have been together for 46 years. It's the story of their relationship and lives.

great song, question, is this a song about god and how people are questioning whether he exists?? and like good vs evil.??
and brandon uses cinderella as a metaphor for god?

"And the decades disappear like sinking
Ships we persevere god gives us hope
    But we still fear
    We don't know
    The mind is poison
    castles in the sky
    Sit stranded vandalized
    The draw bridge is closing"

i reckon thats about people are beiginning to think that god doesnt exist.
great song, love the new album and the lyrics are better then ever.
