Beatles Biography

The Beatles, one of the most well-known and popular groups of all time was first created in Liverpool, England in 1960. The band included John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison –, and Ringo Starr (Richard Starkey). Lennon had first created a skiffle group (a type of folk music with jazz, blues and country influences) called The Quarrymen. McCartney then joined Lennon’s group, and shortly after so did Harrison. The name “The Beetles” was suggested as a tribute to Buddy Holly and The Crickets, soon after the band had changed their name to the “The Beatles”. Although their style of music was rock & roll and skiffle the band was able to work with different genres such as Tin Pan Alley and psychedelic rock. The incredibly famous group became trend-setters through their clothes, style and statements.

Band Members
Paul McCartney (bass guitar and vocals) was born on June 18, 1942 in Liverpool General Hospital in England. As a student, he studied music and art. At the young age of 11, McCartney had been one of the only four students that had passed the 11+ exam, which earned him a spot at the Liverpool Institute for boys. Paul McCartney’s girlfriend Dot Rhone together for 3 years and was expecting to marry but cancelled the wedding after Rhone lost their unborn child. Jane Asher, a woman McCartney had a 5 year relationship with was also expected to marry until Asher found out he was being unfaithful. Linda McCartney was his first wife, who he said “gave him the strength and courage to work again” after the 1969 breakup of The Beatles. The couple had four children (Paul had adopted Linda’s daughter Heather) and 3 more. Linda unfortunately succumbed to breast cancer in 1989. In 2002, McCartney jumped back into the game, marrying a former model, Heather Mills. In 2003, they had their first child Beatrice, and then divorced in May of 2008.

John Lennon (bass guitar and vocals), born October 9, 1940 in Liverpool, England, was a rock musician, singer, songwriter and peace activist. Lennon had always been the most controversial type in the group, through his work as a peace activist and artist, even as a student at the Liverpool College of Art, where he often ridiculed and caused disturbances to the point where he was not let back. Lennon met his first wife Cynthia Lennon at the Liverpool College of Art. After a bumpy and difficult marriage, the two got divorced. Yoko Ono, was Lennon’s partner-in-crime. The couple began public protests against the Vietnam War. Lennon had even asked to have a king sized bed put into his recording studio, after Ono had gotten into a car accident and been injured. In June of 1973 the couple had split, and 2 short years later the couple had reunited. They had their first son, Sean, who also happened to be born on Lennon’s 35th birthday. The couple stayed together until the murder of Lennon on December 8, 1980. Mark David Chapman, who had been stalking Lennon since October shot the musician in the back 4 times. When Lennon was asked how he believes he may die he was quoted saying ‘I’ll probably be popped off by some loony.” Rolling stone had ranked Lennon as number 5 on its list of “100 greatest singers of all time.”

George Harrison (lead guitar and vocals) born on February 24, 1943 in Liverpool England. Until Harrison was in his mid 40s he believed he had believed he was born on the 25th. Besides being part of the most successful musical group in history, Harrison was also a record producer and co-founder of the production company Handmade Films. The musician had been married twice, in 1966 he married model Pattie Boyd, then in 1978 married a co-worker of the production company. He had one son, Dhani Harrison. Harrison succumbed to lung cancer in 2001.

Ringo Starr (drums and vocals) also known as Richard Starkey was born in Liverpool, England on July 7, 1940. Starkey happens to be the only beattle member that continued on with a solo career and didn’t reach number 1 in the UK, although he had greater success in North America. Although he wasn’t as successful as his band members in solo musical careers, he had luck in television and movies and held many smaller and larger roles. Starkey found another passion for work, investing in a furniture company in 1971. His first wife was Maureen Cox who he had 3 children with. Starkey later married Barbara Bach, the actress who played the leading role of the ‘bond girl’.

Band Breakup
After the breakup of the band in 1970, all members of the hit boy band continued on to have successful solo musical careers. The craziness that surrounded the band, also known as “BEATLEMANIA” no doubt ably changed pop culture in their era, and continued to have an effect throughout the decades, and to this day still continue to have fans all around the world. The group changed the way things were done in the past; they played around in the studio and become an innovative, ground-breaking group. The group continues to sell record high albums, in spite of breaking up 30 some years ago. Their legacy remains and without a doubt will continue for decades to come.
