his nickname given to him by his grandfather when he was younger was "tip" but because of his accent ppl thought he was saying "chip" so he spelled it for them hence now T.I.P . when he got a deal in 2001, he shortened his name to T.I. due to his label mate Q-tip clearly out of respect for him
