On deCODED, we usually analyze songs with a deep, heartfelt meaning. We’ve done breakup songs, songs about family, and songs about being in love but sometimes you gotta let loose and have a little fun, right? That’s why this week on deCODED we’re going to analyze the lyrics to one of our favorite songs, the super fun, super fast Super Bass by the one and only Nicki Minaj!
We’re not the only fans of the song; Super Bass has been covered an endless amount of times by young and old(er) and even by some celebs. Here’s what we think Nicki means in her lyrics…
This one is for the boys with the boomin’ system / Top down, AC with the coolin’ system
Remember in “Pimp My Ride” when they installed a crazy sound system into the truck? Nicki digs dudes with boomin’ systems in their rides. And dudes who have enough baller swag (aka not caring about money) to run the A/C while the top is down.
He a muthaf***in trip, trip, sailor of the ship, ship When he make it drip, drip kiss him on the lip, lip / That’s the kind of dude I was lookin’ for / And yes you’ll get slapped if you’re lookin’ ho
Being with him is like a trip, an escape. He runs his own “ship” and he’s not afraid to show it PLUS he keeps her dripping in diamonds! She’s protective of her man. Don’t look at him, she’ll getcha!
I mean, you’re so shy and I’m loving your tie / You’re like slicker than the guy with the thing on his eye, oh
She loves a guy who isn’t too cocky and dresses well. The “thing on his eye” is a reference to Slick Rick, the rapper with an eye patch.
This one is for the boys in the Polos / Entrepreneur n****s n the moguls / He could ball with the crew, he could solo / But I think I like him better when he dolo
This is Nicki’s shout out to preppy, entrepreneurial guys who make their own money. He can make money with a crew and he can make it on his own. Also, for the last line: Kid Cudi’s nickname is Mr. Solo Dolo: could this be a reference about him?
