Oh, The Grammys, pop music’s biggest night! All the stars are around in their Sunday best looking glitzy and singing pretty. But mingling amongst the pop super-stars and A-listers are some other fantastic musicians who have been honoured with Grammy nominations. Just because these artists haven’t necessarily been on the cover of Billboard or Rolling Stone, doesn’t mean they aren’t worth knowing about, and it especially doesn’t mean they aren’t producing great music.
We were pleasantly surprised to find the following 3 under-the-radar acts nominated for various Grammy awards in 2012 so we wanted to introduce you to them. Remember that time Esperanza Spalding won “Best New Artist” and nobody knew who she was? We don’t want that to happen to you. Let us know what you think!
Nominated for Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best New Artist, and Best Alternative Music Album
Probably the most well-known person on this list is Bon Iver. The “band’s” frontman Justin Vernon may sneak under the radar from time to time but he does so while hanging out with Kanye West and Rick Ross. Yep, he appeared on Kanye’s track “Monster” and “That’s My B*tch” from Watch The Throne so he’s familiar with the rappers. His musical style with Bon Iver, however is all slow, soulful acoustic rock that is as likely to make you cry as it is to make you smile.
Nominated for Best Dance/Electronica Album
These electric dance pop music-men are music festival favorites and there’s a chance you’ve heard their music on a FIFA commercial! Assuming you’re unfamiliar with Cut Copy here’s a little background: these guys hail from the land down under (Australia) and have been at it since 2001. They already have 3 studio albums under their belts and they’re not slowing down, especially since they’re nominated at the Grammys!
Nominated for Best Rock Performance
The Decemberists are a folk-rock band who have existed and been successful on the indie scene for years and with their first Grammy nom, they’re poised to take the rock world by storm. We love their folksy, relatable lyrics, and their amazing story-telling ability in every song they produce. The band already has 6 studio albums so it’s easy to jump right into their music and get lost for a while.
