This weekend was the exciting kickoff to something that only comes around once every 4 years: the Olympic Summer Games! With the Games taking place in London, it was only expected that the Opening Ceremony was about all things Great Britain. There were historical references, a voyage through the decades, and we even got to see the Queen parachute out of a helicopter with James Bond. But the most exciting part (for us at least) was all the great music that director Danny Boyle threw into the mix.
“The British Invasion” is a musical expression for all the amazing UK-originated musical acts — from the Beatles, to the Rolling Stones, to Dusty Springfield — that became popular worldwide beginning in the 60′s. Since then, Great Britain has become known for their musical talent and the Opening Ceremony showcased that beautifully. Here are the best songs in the show (you can see the full song list here):
“Won’t you come on over / Stop makin’ a fool out of me / Why don’t you come on over Valerie?”
“I see a ship in the harbor / I can and shall obey / But if it wasn’t for your misfortunes / I’d be a heavenly person today”
“God save the Queen / She ain’t no human being / There is no future / In England’s dreaming”
“London calling to the faraway towns / Now war is declared and battle come down / London calling to the underworld / Come out of the cupboard, you boys and girls”
“Hey Jude, don’t make it bad / Take a sad song and make it better / Remember to let her into your heart / Then you can start to make it better”
Queen – Bohemian Rhapsody
“Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? / Caught in a landslide, No escape from reality / Open your eyes, Look up to the skies and see”
“Today is gonna be the day that they’re gonna throw it back to you / By now you shoulda somehow realized what you gotta do”
“There’s a fire starting in my heart / Reaching a fever pitch and it’s bring me out the dark”
“‘Cause it’s a bittersweet symphony, this life / Try to make ends meet, you’re a slave to money then you die”
“I got my head checked / By a jumbo jet / It wasn’t easy / But nothing is, no”
