Like the classic R.E.M. song affirms: everybody hurts, and that’s why we weren’t surprised that so many of you answered our Facebook post asking for songs you would dedicate to your ex. Breaking up is hard to do (do you like how we’re talking in song lyrics? It’s kind of our specialty) and if you’ve done it you know just how hard it can be. Luckily, music helps us get through a multitude of experiences and emotions so here are three songs (one angry, one playful, one sad) that you said you’d dedicate to your exes…
“And I’m here to remind you / Of the mess you left when you went away / It’s not fair to deny me / Of the cross I bear that you gave to me / You, you, you oughta know”
Everyone who follows music now knows this little piece of hard-to-believe-but-apparently-true trivia: this song is reportedly about Dave Coulier… aka Uncle Joey from Full House! The fact that everyone listening knows the identity of Alanis’s ex makes it that much more scathing.
“And although there’s pain in my chest / I still wish you the best with a…F**k you!”
This farewell song to an ex who was only interested in Cee Lo’s money and status is the sweetest revenge. It keeps things sweet when he says “I wish you the best” but you can feel some playful anger when he throws out the old “F you.” Well played.
“Never mind, I’ll find someone like you / I wish nothing but the best for you, too / Don’t forget me, I begged, I remember you said / Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead”
This could possibly be one of the saddest breakup songs in existence but so many of you suggested it! We love this song and we think Adele hits the nail on the head with “Sometimes it lasts in love, but sometimes it hurts instead.” Definitely not a feel-good tune but the lyrics contain beautiful truth.
