I pushed the button and elected him to office and a
He pushed the button and he dropped the bomb
You pushed the button and could watch in on the television
Those motherfuckers didn't last too long

I'm sick of hearing about the have and have not's
Have some personal accountability
The biggest problem with the way that we are doing things is
The more we let you have the less that I'll be keeping for me

Well I use to stand for something
Now I'm on my hands and knees
Trading in my god for this one
and he signs his name with a capital G

Don't give a shit about the temperature in Guatemala
Don't really see what all the fuss is about
Ain't gonna worry about no future generations
And I'm sure somebody's gonna figure it out

Don't try to tell me that some power can corrupt a person
You hadn't had enough to know what it's like
You're only angry cause you wish you were in my position
Now nod your head cause you know that I'm right..alright!

Well I use to stand for something
But forgot what that could be
There's a lot of me inside you
Maybe you're afraid to see

Well I use to stand for something
Now I'm on my hands and knees
Trading in my god for this one
and he signs his name with a capital G

Well I use to stand for something
But forgot what that could be
There's a lot of me inside you
Maybe you're afraid to see

Well I use to stand for something
Now I'm on my hands and knees
Trading in my god for this one
and he signs his name with a capital G

The song is not about Bush, Capital G is for Greed, and it's capitalized in reference to context in the Seven Deadly Sins, in which all Sins are capitalized. We elect Greed into public offices every day, and that same Greed signs away the lives of hundreds of thousands of people with every act of "peacekeeping" or War that it engages. To further clarify why it can't be about Bush, Trent has set the Album's "storyline", if you will, in the future at approx. 2022 AD. The U.S. of A. has become a Military State of some sort and has removed all hostilities with nuclear weapons, thus the first verse. This eradication provokes a new Era, called B.A. instead of A.D., with B.A. being an acronym meaning Born Again. The Album, set in this time period, is released in 0000 B.A.

I don't see how one can say this song is not at least partly about George W. Bush. I also read that Reznor says the G stands for Greed, which makes sense with the lyrics but I would guess that was the diplomatic answer. If it's not about GWB what is the first verse about? Who else did we elect to office who signs his name with a Capital G? In fact, if you look at his wikipedia page you will see that he in fact signs his name capital GW Bush. And to top that all off, Year Zero is a concept album meant to criticize the policies of the United States Government. That's not U.S. centric thinking, it's just the truth. And why wouldn't it relate back to the U.S. Reznor is from the U.S.!

In order to fantasize that this song carries a uncritical, positive conservative message, you would first have to remove it from the context of the whole album. That's plain nonsense.

I'd leave the G as it is, indeterminate. Thus it may well represent God, Greed, and Government, which are all fundamental aspects of the conservative stand on 'human nature', preferred forms of social relations, and our position towards non-human beings on earth.

Generally I'd criticize TR for a self-destructive, defeatist discourse. If, in the great beyond, we well be back in One, this should lead to the realization that the suffering and destruction of all and any beings is also the suffering and destruction of what I have been, what I am, and what I will become.

So, instead of turning the (self)destructive competition and hierarchy -so dear to the conservatives- against (y)ourself as masochism, withdrawal, anorexia and suicide - Destroy what destroys you!

I thought the G stood for God, as if the government was controling the world like a God. It could stand for greed, but he doesn't specify, so if anyone has their own word to place there, then go ahead.

Tret really stood out with this one. I think it stands for God. Although it could stand for greed, but greed is normally not capitalized. God is always capital. So I think its God. =]

ok wtf??? stop being a bunch of american hicks and thinking that the world revolves around gwbush or "god". KurtlivesinNirvana has made a very good point. IF THE WRITER SAYS THATS WAT IT IS THEN THATS WAT IT IS!!! yea u might say it has a deeper meaning but thats only known to trent. you can say its bush or god but then ur just asuming. this is most likely a song about himself because where else are you going to get the music that moves ppl??

come on guys... this is undoubtedly a political song.. and for good reason! people need to be just as involved in politics AS the people in washington... because guess what? we're at war.... so they obviously arent doing a very good job. it's that sort of ignorance and false sense of security that i'd expect from someone who wants to be taken care of by great big america... let me know when you wake up and realize that things aren't getting any better, and your interpretation of the 'G' is just sad... yes it stands for greed, as trent said. but it also has more meaning than meets the eye (what a concept!)

i can't help being sardonic... but you, onetimepost, need to grow a brain for youeself, big mama america won't always take care of you...

Being a devoted conservative thinker, I love this song, because he states some ideas that are fundamental to conservative thinking, albeit in a very masochistic and self punishing vein. Most people in the media and the insufferably liberal mob incorrectly believed that Trent was talking about George W. Bush despite Trent himself stating that the "G" stands for "Greed" in mid April to a German language music magazine. If you know anything about Trent Reznor, you know that he's famous and admired for his darkly masochistic honesty about himself in his songs. If Trent is staying true to his music, I'm sure that when he's coming to grips with the undeniability of his naivity.

I think he's feeling a little self guilt regarding his success, channeling a little of his self resentment into his music, which is what makes his music so charged. At any time, I'm sure he knows that he could just give up all the wealth, and settle into a life of modesty, if he so chose. He hasn't and he won't, having worked too hard for too long to get to where he is.

In this country, "capital" (and power) can be attained and maintained by those who diversify and reinvest their talents (see: Will "The Fresh Prince" Smith, who remains a very successful celebrity and actor as well as musical performer). It can also be lost by those who fail to compete and maintain their personal "wealth" (see: Stanley "M.C. Hammer" Burrell, which lead to him devoting his life to God). If you don't want to work for a piece of the "capital" pie, you don't deserve any.

"Now nod your head because you know that I'm right...alright!"

    Define your terms.

POLITICS: the art/science of controlling people (usually against their will / without their direct consent/knowledge).

Celebrities are simply doing what any rational person should do if their conscience moves them: observing/pointing out this manipulation, deception, propaganda...

In fact, you scare me that you think "the people in washington" should be the only ones "allowed" to speak opinions for/against manipulation of others (under the label of "politics" a.k.a. poly-ticks)

Might I suggest tha tyou read some Lysander Spooner (Google "No Trason" the "Constitution of No Authority") -- and WAKE UP! Begin to govern YOURSELF, stop handing over the reigns of your life to pol-uh-tish-uhns.
