Coldplay Biography

Coldplay is a British quartet that became famous because of their single entitled: “Yellow.” Coldplay is considered as one of the top bands of this era, boasting of combining anthemic rock and pop, making the music charts their “permanent homes”.
Chris Martin (on piano and vocals), Guy Berryman (on bass), Will Champion (on drums), and Jon Buckland (on guitar), make up Coldplay. They all come from families who were music lovers and were encouraged to pursue their passion for music. Martin had a talent in piano ever since he was a little child, influenced by the melodies of Tom Waits. Buckland admired Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton’s guitar playing. Champion, on the other hand, played various instruments, but did not expect that he will stick to the Coldplay drums. Berryman, a Scottish man, loved funk music over indie rock, which is why he was the best choice for the group’s bassist.

The band mates all attended the University College of London, and formed Coldplay in 1996. They had their first performance at a festival in Manchester, and eventually released their EP called: “Safety” after that first gig. In 1999, in the month of April, the group signed a deal with U.K.’s Parlophone, resulting to their EP entitled: “Blue Room”, consisting of five tracks, giving them the title of the “next Travis” due to Coldplay’s charm and simple yet lovable acoustics.

In July 2000, Coldplay released their debut album: “Parachutes” which became a very big hit, not only in the UK, but also in the US. The sales in the US, in fact, surpassed that of the U.K. sales. The success was, of course, the result of the crowd’s following of “Yellow.” August 2002 marked the release of Coldplay’s sophomore album: “A Rush of Blood to the Head”, which was released both locally and internationally. The group soon went on a global concert tour to be able to bring joy to their fans all over the world.

The songs from their sophomore album: “In My Place” and “Clocks” gave Coldplay awards from the Grammy’s. Martin, the band’s vocalist, even became more popular after his marriage to Gwyneth Paltrow in 2003. In the spring of 2005, Coldplay released their single: “Speed of Sound”, which was recorded with the Cure’s Morrissey. The single and the album it came from topped the music charts from all over the world, proving that Coldplay’s music, is indeed, patronized by many.
