Dave Matthews Band Biography

The ‘90s was known for unique music groups, one of which was the Dave Matthews Band, known for its combination of jazz, pop, folk, and world music. Reflective lyrics and one-of-a-kind resonance brought the band to stardom in the rock arena.
Matthews, before he concentrated on his music, was first drafted as a soldier of South Africa at age eighteen, which resulted to his family opting to reside in the United States for good, specifically in Virginia. Matthews got a job as a Miller’s bartender, while in the morning, he engaged in songwriting. It was not long when Matthews had the chance to jam with local musicians who regularly held their gigs at Miller’s.

After several jamming sessions, the Dave Matthews Band was started, with John D’ earth as the group’s trumpeter, LeRoi Moore responsible for the reeds, Carter Beauford as the drummer, and, Dave Matthews on vocals. The bands first concert was held in the spring of 1991, with permanent members being: Matthews, Moore, Beauford, Boyd Tinsley (violinist) and Stefan Lessard on bass.
In 1993, the Dave Matthews Band introduced their first record: “Remember Two Things,” which had its success in college charts, even turning gold after just a short while. Because of this accomplishment, the group was signed under RCA, and come 1994, “Dreaming” and “Under the Table” were made public. The two had hits like “Ants Marching,” “Satellite,” etc., becoming quadruple platinum.

In 1996, the band’s album “Crash” reached Number Two on the chart, which also yielded a “Best Rock Vocal Performances by a Duo or Group” in the Grammy’s after just a year from its release, particularly because of the hit: “So Much to Say.” In the year 1998, the Dave Matthews Band released “Before These Crowded Streets,” a studio album that speaks of a besieged male’s longing for his lover, which hit the 1st spot on the charts.
Matthews also tried his hand at recording without his group members in 2001. His work named: “Some Devil,” gained a 2004 Grammy Award under “Best Male Rock Vocal Performance,” meant for his single entitled: “Gravedigger.”
The Dave Matthews Band now focuses live albums that were shot at scenic spots such as Colorado’s Red Rocks, The Columbia River Valley in Washington State, etc. Some of their albums also featured urban sites like Piedmont Park in Atlanta and the Radio City Music Hall in the city of New York.
