Entertainment Weekly

The most melodically acute distillation of that style yet.

There is plenty to love here, so don't be surprised when you find it has become the current soundtrack to your life.

Singer Davey Havok continues to impress with his range and ability to quickly turn from a throat-searing scream to a bare-boned croon, as does the entire band's consistently exciting approach to songwriting and their music aesthetic.

8/10

All Music Guide

Source

Even as the guys stretch and flex their songwriting muscles, they never fail to remember where they came from, instead using their past work as the foundation to their essential growth.

8/10

Slant Magazine

Source

Both accessible and artistic, Decemberunderground is destined to give AFI that larger mainstream audience they missed out on the last time around.

7.5/10

The Phoenix

Source

Although they love drama, AFI never abandon believability here. Which means the arena-rock trappings don’t make the music feel fake -- they just make it feel more exciting than life.

7.5/10

The Onion (A.V. Club)

Source

An ambitious, enjoyable album that expands AFI's sound while retaining the bombastic, aggressive rock the band played throughout the '90s.

7.5/10

E! Online

By mimicking the sound of every Hot Topic band crashing into one--with songs that pilfer from the Killers, My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy--we have to wonder if they haven't just orchestrated their own extinction.

7/10

Blender

Source

Sung in his almost icy, stentorian cry--and outfitted with mega-choruses--the tracks feel as epic as Havok's themes. [Jul 2006, p.97]

7/10

The New York Times

"Decemberunderground" is less cohesive than its predecessor and apes the band's influences far too obviously for musicians of this caliber. Even so, it's vastly entertaining.

6/10

Uncut

Source

Evident is a sizeable debt to '80s electropop. [Aug 2006, p.84]

6/10

Spin

Source

While Decemberunderground sounds terrific, at times Havok's dear-diary lyrics are so awkward they're almost laughable. [Jul 2006, p.81]

6/10

Rolling Stone

Source

Where Sorrow is a great album, listenable front to back, Decemberunderground just has good songs. [15 Jun 2006, p.91]

6/10

New Musical Express

Source

With a comeback pitched between the indulgent love-metal of HiM and the pubescent pop-punk of Fall Out Boy, AFI's hiatus looks increasingly less like laziness and more like a marketing masterstroke.

6/10

Stylus Magazine

Source

Decemberunderground carries a distinct whiff of missed opportunities.

Most of these songs take my breath away with amazment and sorrow. There music means alot and this CD is amazing. Silver and cold, the interview, love like winter, and miss murder are my favorite songs on this CD. I love the prelude though. I don't care if Davey's Black and green he's a wonderful person with a beautiful talent. You don't find alot've people like Davey in the world so just be happy to have AFI while there still a band.

I love this album, although it is different than their albums. but i think this is not their best my fav.s are The Art of Drowning, and Black Sails In The Sunset. I really liked " The Missing Frame" , "Kill Caustic", and "Kiss And Control".

DAVEY ISN'T GAY. so he likes him a lil make up. he likes floppy hair. doesn't make him gay. even if he was, it wouldn't detract from the utter magnificence of AFI's music XD

but yes the album is fantastic :D
in my opinion it's not as good as Sing The Sorrow or The Art Of Drowning, or even Black Sails, because it's sort of moved away from the sound that i loved... but then again, I loved their older sound, and when STS came out it was definitely different, but i still loved it. i love "Kiss And Control" and "The Interview", they've got to be my two favorite songs from Decemberunderground. i just hope that they don't go mainstream. that would really suck, and i wouldn't know what to do... they've been my favorite band for years. can't have MTV and the radio destroying that for me. meh.
