I buy things that are made to measure
I like to throw 'em around, hit it
Opener cullender throw this handle
They come together and they make a big sound
They come together and they make a big sound
Variety is the proposition
Modern is out of date, hit it
Neatest fitting comfy handles
They come together and they make a big sound
They come together and they make a big sound
CHORUS
All across the land
Its made for the hand
All across the land
Its made for the hand
Mould and patterns add to interest
Hand made on a hand made face, hit it
Made and curved by ergonomics
They come together and they make a big sound
They come together and they make a big sound
Repeat CHORUS
Ergonomics are efficient
Make you think in symmetry
Use the manual it's tradition
Made to aid you instantly
This is a stand-out track on Kajagoogoo's debut album, WHITE FEATHERS of 1983. Though the choice was rather large, this would have probably made a perfect fourth single, after the three previous hits TOO SHY, OOH TO BE AH and HANG ON NOW, but it was never released as such, instead, maybe because the decision to go on without Limahl had already been taken... But, conjectures apart, the song is actually very strong per se, both musically and lyrically. If the music is undoubtedly catchy and perfectly suitable for dancing to, it is the lyrics which are especially interesting, as it is already clear from the original title of the track, ERGONOMICS (at the time still a little bit mysterious word for many people, which made it all the more interesting): it is all about new technology, making it easier for human beings and their body, in particular the hand, as Limahl puts it in the live introduction and screams in the reiterated chorus. As the other songs on the first album by the group, ERGONOMICS successfully depicts a little piece of reality, an independent microcosm, of which the album WHITE FEATHERS represents the general macrocosm inscribing all the songs therein included, mostly metaphoric (even this particular song could be taken to mean its apparent contrary, that is the fact that ergonomcs made it a little too easy for human beings!). However, the idea by itself of using the ergonomic concept for a pop song would deserve more than 5 stars...
