I was a quick-wit boy, diving too deep for coins
All of your street light eyes wide on my plastic toys
Then when the cops closed the fair, I cut my long baby hair
Stole me a dog-eared map and called for you everywhere
Have I found you
Flightless bird, jealous, weeping or lost you, american mouth
Big pill looming

Now I'm a fat house cat
Nursing my sore blunt tongue
Watching the warm poison rats curl through the wide fence cracks
Pissing on magazine photos
Those fishing lures thrown in the cold
And clean blood of Christ mountain stream
Have I found you
Flightless bird, grounded, bleeding or lost you, american mouth
Big pill stuck going down

I think the movie twilight can really relate to this song in a way I think that when it says have I found you flightless bird its saying have I finally found what I've been waiting for all this time relating to Edward of course and that verse for Bella is saying that love hit her when she least expected it.

I think this song is about the loss of innocence, youth, and individualism and the dread and unhappiness of being conformed to a role. The first verse is all about the boldness, wildness, and freedom of youth but also about its brevity. Even as he is the "quick wet boy, diving too deep for coins" there are those waiting for him to grow up ("All of your street light eyes wide on my plastic toys"). Eventually he is forced to abandon youth ("when the cops closed the fair, I cut my long baby hair, Stole me a dog-eared map and called for you everywhere"). The dog eared map is the road map to confiormity. He is expected to be like everyone else . He approaches with a sense of dread ("Bill pill looming") for this is a hard pill to swallow. In the second verse he is now the "Fat house cat," stuck inside, conforming to expectations and resentful and unhappy. He wonders if he will ever be something different ("Have I found you, flightless bird, grounded or lost you...") This also appears to be an indictment of American greed/conformity/lack of individuality (American mouth, big pill looming," "American mouth, big pill stuck going down"). Anyway, that's waht I see. Great song.

I also agree with some things that MsRaeLee spoke about and I also agree with pbosnich about the dog-eared map. I would like to throw one more idea out there. Have you ever heard the expression "Sometimes the truth is hard to swallow"? In the phrases "big pill looming" and "stuck going down" I believe the big pill refers to the cold, hard truth. When the big pill is looming it means that whatever the truth turns out to be, good or bad, it will just have to be accepted. And when he says it is stuck going down it means that it was a hard truth, or a hard fate, to accept.
