Foo Fighters Biography

The Foo Fighters was formed after the suicide of Kurt Cobain, Nirvana’s frontman, in 1994. Dave Grohl, Nirvana’s drummer, then came to the decision of recording his compositions which he started years back. In 1995, Grohl made a debut which he called: “Foo Fighters”. Handling all the vocals and almost all the instruments himself, Grohl called his 1995 debut Foo Fighters, the name inspired by a term used during World War II to signify UFO’s. Songs that were in the album were a mixture of rock and punk, setting the tone of the Foo Fighters’ music.
When the time came wherein the album has to be promoted by touring, Grohl asked William Goldsmith and Nate Mendel to join Foo Fighters. The two used to be members of “Sunny Day Real Estate”, an alternative rock band. Pat Smear was also asked to join, who had been a part of Nirvana’s final tour. Those were the first four members of the Foo Fighters.
In 1996, the Foo Fighters started recording their follow-up album: “The Colour and the Shape”. It was also the time when Goldsmith decided to leave the group because of a fight with Grohl after Grohl proceeded to record the drumming parts by himself. Taylor Hawkins, who had previously worked with Alanis Morissette then replaced Goldsmith. By the time the follow-up album was released, Smear was replaced with Franz Stahl who came from “Scream”, a punk band, who also had to leave during the time the Foo Fighter’s third album “There Is Nothing Left to Lose” was recorded. After it’s release, Chris Shiflett was added to the group, who used to be a member of another punk group: “No Use for a Name”, and the four members finally remained together.
The group’s stability gave way to their success. Their 2002 album: “One by One” went straight platinum, thanks to the singles: “Times Like These” and “All My Life”. The Foo Fighters’ 2005 album called “In Your Honor”, was also launched, and was in honor of John Kerry who ran for presidency in 2004 and who has been campaigned for by the group, to be more specific, Grohl. The said album was a collection of two genres: rock and acoustic. The group’s “Echoes, Silence, Patience, & Grace” was released in 2007 and has been successful that it has even been nominated for several Grammy awards, including the category “Album of the Year”.
