How cruel is the golden rule?
When the lives we lived are only golden-plated
And I knew that the lights of the city were too heavy for me
Though I carried karats for everyone to see

And I saw God cry in the reflection of my enemies
And all the lovers with no time for me
And all of the mothers raise their babies
To stay away from me

Tongues on the sockets of electric dreams
Where the sewage of youth drown the spark of my teens
And I knew that the lights of the city were too heavy for me
(Too heavy for me)
Though I carried karats for everyone to see
(Everyone to see)

And I saw God cry in the reflection of my enemies
And all the lovers with no time for me
And all of the mothers raise their babies
To stay away from me

And pray they don't grow up to be

Sometimes with this song, i think of a peaceful place. me, and sum1 i luv very much. jus realxing. this song is so peaceful, sumtines it makes me cry. basicly, they're talking about a similar place to heaven. the golden rule everyone remebers:respcet. its telling u to think of that place and you'll be alright. deeply think, almost meditate. thats how strong this song is.

This song is so beautiful and emotional. It's different to the other songs that fall out boy has done before.

I think this song is about how you fake things to get attention, but end up being really lonely.
What is "The Golden Rule"? Treat others the way you want to be treated. When the lives we've lived are only golden-plated. They're fake. "Though I carried Karats for everyone to see" 'I showed off so everyone could pay attention to me.'
I really like this song. =]

    This song is just beautiful.
I think it's their only song with a meaning. Some songs, like "Hum Hallelujah", sound just like a bunch of words.
    This, however, sounds poetic.

for hsaiss I think the song is about feeling fake and the lonliness it entails...especially while growing up.The fake bit I figured because he sais "Golden Plated" as in not REAL gold. so people would think he's "Golden" when really he isn't. and then the growing up bit I got from "The sewage of youth drowned the spark of my teens" and then the whole song has a very lonely vibe to it. and that's what I think it is about. how about you? or anyone els?

AlyBoo, I couldn't agree more. I think you hit the nail right on the head, my friend.

I think this song also has a feeling of inadequacy to it, which is very hard to write, but, if well-done, something everyone can relate to.
This song is very well done, it shows a softer side that still manages to be very emotional, beautiful, and powerful.

And that is my PSA of the day. :]
