Mary-Ann and Wanda were the best of friends
All through their high school days
Both members of the 4H Club
Both active in the F.F.A.
After graduation Mary-Ann went out
Lookin' for a brand new world
Wanda looked all around this town
And all she found was Earl
Well, it wasn't two weeks after she got married
That Wanda started gettin’ abused
She put on dark glasses, long sleeve blouses
And make-up to cover a bruise
Well, she finally got the nerve to file for divorce
She let the law take it from there
But Earl walked right through that restraining order
And put her in intensive care
Right away Mary-Ann flew in from Atlanta
On a red eye midnight flight
She held Wanda’s hand as they worked out a plan
And it didn't take ‘em long to decide
That Earl had to die
Goodbye, Earl, those black eyed peas
They tasted alright to me Earl, you’re feelin’ weak
Why don’t you lay down and sleep, Earl
Ain’t it dark, wrapped up in that tarp, Earl
The cops came by to bring Earl in
They searched the house high and low
Then they tipped their hats and said, "Thank you, ladies
If you hear from him let us know”
Well, the weeks went by and
Spring turned to summer and summer faded into fall
And it turns out he was a missing person
Who nobody missed at all
So the girls bought some land and a roadside stand
Out on Highway 109
They sell Tennessee ham and strawberry jam
And they don't lose any sleep at night
‘Cause Earl had to die
Goodbye, Earl, we need a break
Lets go out to the lake, Earl, we’ll pack a lunch
And stuff you in the trunk Earl, well, is that alright?
Good, let’s go for a ride, Earl, hey
Well, hey, hey, hey
Oh, hey, hey, hey
Well, hey, hey, hey

This is a song about the loyalty of friendship. How you can depend upon a friend in times of crisis or need, instead of only through the good times. This song explains that restraining orders are not as effective as each needs to be in order to protect women from abusive husbands. How intimidating and fearful the woman has become and feels she has no where to turn and how vulnerable a woman is to her abusive husband, boyfriend or commonlaw partner; even though she has restraining order issued by the local authorities which is suppose to protect her fully. This is about a woman who has done the right thing by turning to the police, getting a restraining order and yet remains so unprotected, vulnerable and intimidated by her abusive husband that she feels trapped, insecure and desperate and given no other choice but to make sure Earl never has another chance to abuse, intimidate, threaten and/or stalk her ever again, so she can be totally free of Earl and never have to be fearful of Earl again.. This is about feeling as though you're trapped and being pushed into a corner where you have no escape or control over your own life even though you have legal restraining order which is suppose to protect but does not protect the woman when the abuser has no respect for the woman or for the law.

First of all I'd like to say that I think this song is funny too, I mean I understand the story itself is not a laughing matter, abusive relationships are scary business, however the way the story is told, they made it quite funny. I really doubt people were laughing at the story, just the way they told it. Jpears, lighten up a bit.

I would like to translate this song to those who think it is funny: A woman gets beaten within an inch of her life by an abusive husband. Along with her friend, she ****s him and throws his body in a lake. Funny stuff!
