I hurt myself today To see if I still feel I focus on the pain The only thing that's real The needle tears a hole The old familiar sting Try to kill it all away But I remember everything
What have I become My sweetest friend Everyone I know goes away In the end And you could have it all My empire of dirt I will let you down I will make you hurt
I wear this crown of thorns Upon my liar's chair [ From: http://www.metrolyrics.com/hurt-lyrics-johnny-cash.html ] Full of broken thoughts I cannot repair Beneath the stains of time The feelings disappear You are someone else I am still right here
What have I become My sweetest friend Everyone I know goes away In the end And you could have it all My empire of dirt I will let you down I will make you hurt
If I could start again A million miles away I would keep myself I would find a way

Tell Us What These Lyrics Mean To You...

yeah, all my respects to NIN, I love their alternative sound since their beginning, but, really, this song needed an interpreter to blow the spirit in it, before Cash performance, it was just another NIN song, now it is universal ! honestly, I didn't even understood the lyrics before, and now I discover an inspired poetry

MusicAddictt

I agree with Starburste,Johnny Cah's version seems genuine,not so much with NIN's.

starburste

I realize that NIN wrote this song, but what everyone has to understand is that they are two different songs. The sound of the music is different and so are some of the lyrics. I personally like JOHNNY CASH'S version better, because when he sang it, it was heart felt and I could feel the emotion. You don't really get that with NIN. Even though the lead is supposed to be emotional while singing, I don't get a connection. R.I.P. J.R.Cash

I disagree about the emotion comment. Trent's version is more of dark despair and deep hopelessness just before suicide. It's strongly expressive. If you're more of Johnny fan than Nine inch nails, you're going to embrace the song in whichever singer you are more inclined to. Johny's version was good, but the songs creator is the one who decides its true essense.

Johnny Cash was real! i dont care who the f*** wrote this song. Johnny Cash cared about all his fans, do you really think your preious nine inch nails care what happens to you? Johnny did. this song was fake before John remade it! RIP JOHNNY CASH WE LOVE YOU!

gloom of art

You obviously are a strongly biased J. Cash fan. Johnny's style of music and Trent's style are obviously worlds apart. You should remember, Johnny must have respected and admired Trent(nine inch nails) enough to do a cover of the song. The cover was done well. It was unique to Johnny's nature. Trent cares for his fans the same as any other artist, maybe even more. You obviously know nothing of what you're talking about.Your mind is so shallow it's a shame I wasted these two minutes even responding to your vacuous comment, its fans like you who are a disgrace to the artists you admire. The song was very real before johnny did it. Trent Reznor is an artist to its purest form.

Hate Sighed

Johnny Cash took a great NIN song and MADE it HIS. Not better or worse then the original; they're two different songs with the same lyrics.

xeroxxed

This is a NIN song. NINE INCH NAILS. Mr Reznor poured his emotion into this song, Cash asked to cover it.. -tear- NIN.. see it live,, see 'hurt' live, see 'right where it belongs' live.. Yeah, thanks to Cash for bringing to song to more people. But in my opinion the original wins. Ultimate win.
