Jason Mraz Biography

Jason Mraz is an American singer who grew up in Mechanicsville in Virginia. He was born on June 1977 and had a strong passion for music, though he actually started playing the guitar at a “mature” age of eighteen. Mraz studied in New York with a course in musical theater, but that was only for a brief period of time. He eventually transferred to San Diego where he played with Carlos Olmeda and Toca Rivera in Southern California clubs.

Mraz is very much famous not only in the United States, but also in Australia and Japan. He has a strong and clear voice with positive lyrical content to match, which made his first single called: “The Remedy (I Won’t Worry) a big hit in 2003. It was, in fact, played regularly over radio stations, VH1, and MTV. The said single also helped increase the sales of his debut album: “Waiting for My Rocket to Come”, which was turned platinum by the RIAA.

Jason Mraz has performed with famous artists like Jewel, the Dave Matthews Band, Bob Dylan, etc. in November of 2005 at San Diego’s Copley Symphony Hall. He has also been on tour together with the Rolling Stones and Alanis Morrissette. His follow up album entitled: “Mr. A-Z” was launched a few months before his performance at San Diego, and the album held 5th place at the Billboard 200 chart. “Mr. A-Z” sold close to 90,000 copies in its first week of release. The said album also nominated for: “Best Engineered Album” in the Grammy Award.

Mraz was also featured in The Gap’s ad named: “The Favorites”, wherein he worked with other famous singers such as Joss Stone, Michelle Williams, Keith Urban, etc. Mraz also performed from time to time with Billy Galewood, an artist who concentrated on funk, hip-hop, and folk elements, and was a fellow student of Mraz in New York. The two also collaborated on some songs, including Mraz’ third single entitled: “Curbside Prophet”, from the album: “Waiting for My Rocket to Come”. Mraz and Galewood also went on tour together in 2005.

Some of the awards Mraz has taken home include: “Best Acoustic” in the 2003 San Diego Music Award, “Artist of the Year” still in the San Diego Music Award, etc. Other trivia about Jason Mraz: his last name: Mraz is actually Czech in origin, which means “frost”; he used to be a cheerleader; he used to perform weekly at Java Joe’s in California.
