The book of genesis is meant to be taken literally. It says nowhere in the bible that it is not supposed to be. If you don't take it literally because you don't believe it, that is understandable. I think it is awesome that science is finding out how complex everything is. It seems like that would disprove the existence of a God, but to me personally it just reminds me how awesome God is. And the more complex, intricate, and perfectly placed we discover things are in the universe, it lessens the chance that we are made by chance! I cannot prove my God exists to anyone. That's between you and God and I have no right to tread there. The only thing I can do is testify about the great things he is doing in my life, because I handed it over to him. I am by no means perfect in any way. I was depressed, I had no self worth, I was alone, and without purpose in life. He saved me from that pit I was in and he is working in my life still. The goal isn't perfection, it's the journey that counts as we trust Christ with our lives. It's by nothing that I did, but by his love and grace alone that I am saved. If you dont believe in Jesus, I don't judge you. The apostle Paul says that believers and non-believers are on the same level with God! We're all human. So please fellow christians don't think it's your duty to make people believe and don't think you are above ANYONE (I have been there and its so untrue and it turns people off to the truth). Let jesus work in your life, tell others what he has done for you personally, then leave them alone! We are just supposed to plant the seed and God will do the watering. We can't judge or talk bad to them if they talk against your beliefs or your God. Instead lets just love them and pray for them that they come to know Jesus. Erm, I am back, I posted that post a while ago, and I have just googled "Dannyboy182" and found this old post, I don't really know what to say... Usually I am not having a go at Christians for what they believe in, I was probably having a bad day, hence listening to this awesome song.

BTW If religion was right then everybody would be the same religion, because "God" would have written the same book for everybody, also to the guy who said their are holes in evolution AND creationism... I think there is a bigger hole in creationism, that being that snapping your fingers doesn't create complex organisms, even if you do have a super beard.
What I think is hilarious is the fact that people think Evolution and Christianity are mutually exclusive, when they're not. The book of Genesis wasn't meant to be taken literally; anyway that reads it and does take it literally will forever be an enigma to me. As for you, dannyboy, I'd recommend reading some of the current thoughts about where the hell life actually came from. The whole amino acid / amoeba theory doesn't hold water becomes life doesn't come from non-life. It's impossible.
As for the existence of God? Causal law keeps pointing at the Big Bang, and there's all the incontrovertible evidence you could want for it - I believe the Big Bang happened. But there's no explanation for what caused the Big Bang to occur, and it was an occurrence - causal law demands science explain what the prior cause to it was.

I do believe in heaven and for all the ones that may doubt it or not believe fully i just have one thing to say to all you. I respect your beliefs and think its cool so many people can have different views. But if heaven and god are not real then havn't i just lived my life in good morals according to a book :D Sounds good to me! haha also just a question to ponder if you don't believe in god. If i am wrong and i die then i lived a good life according to a book.

In the Bible, one of the apostles, thomas, asks to see Jesus' hand once he returns from the dead to make sure that it is him. He wanted to see the marks that the nails left in his hands once he was crucified.
Jesse ovbiously used this to his advantage and added them to his lyrics.
it has nothing to do with suicide.
It's almost like he's saying that once he gets to heaven, someone [thomas] is going to stop him and see if he is for real.
it is a simple doctrine to understand in this song. nobody knows exactly how they are gonna go, but we do know that we are all going. Those who have accepted christ and his gift of blood will be in heaven, and the rest in hell. looking at that gift, Jesus, on that fateful day in a. d. 33, took the sins of this world upon his sinless body. This would insinuate metaphorically that humanity, not just the roman guards that day, beat christ, and nailed his mangled corpse to the cross. every time we do not do something good(james 4:17) we are participating in the beatings, and hammering of the nails. the smart scholarly people call him the propitiation of our sins. what this song is saying is exactly what we all should feel at some point. we dont hit the mark with god except through jesus christ. this explains the feelings of darkness. when someone has died for you so you do not have to be in bondage to sin, but yet you still do the sins of this world, its a little slap in the face. reality is we all deserve hell. Thank jesus for his sacrifice. lets stop slappin him in his face, shall we.

dude its a pretty freakin amazing song, im really not positive on what he is talking about but im gunna go along the lines of what misicfowler said and say its talkin about the after life with lines like "I'm a little bit scared of what comes after…Do I divide and fall apart?" I think he grew up in the church and has all these thoughts running through his mind but does not know what is true or what to believe. I went through this same thing. I grew up in the church and knew everything about the Bible, but i had no beliefs, i didnt know what was true. So these last months as i started college i wanted to find out what was true. I started looking up stuff to see if the Bible was true, and i found like ten different things and could line them up with different sites that backed up the Bible. Like there was some rock found with Pontius Pilate Governor of Judea written on it, and hes in the Bible, then theres the dead scrolls, and theres over 2000 copies of the New Testament found compared to like 10 writings found of Plato, and everybody believes he exists and was a scholar. There was just overwhelming evidence to back up the bible, but even if i believe the bible what does it do? I must either believe all of it and what it says about Christ and his death saving me or not. Truth is truth, if someone says that everything they say is true then its either true or false, you have to decide but truth will still be true even if u say its not true. If u say gravity is not real you will have a bruised but if u do a cannon ball in the air, gravity is real. Truth is truth. So i think its easier to believe in something that has proof than something that doesnt have proof. Im not knocking anyone, but there has been no missing link found to back up evolution. So i just believed that Christ died for my sins and God raised him from the dead, and i cant prove it all but there is at least proof to back it up. Big tangent but thats what i believe.
dannyboy182, i hate to break it to you buddy, but there are just as many holes in evolution as there are in creation. It's called the theory of evolution because it is just that, a theory. So don't use that to discount Christianity, it'll never work. We could bash our heads against each others forever about that one though. And Christianity is not simply about what happens when we die, it is about how to live our lives in a Godly manner. To live to serve others and to make the word a better place. Religion as of late has gotten a bad rep. because people have used it as justification to do terrible things. Good things come out of it as well. It give purpose to a persons life. I honestly can't imagine living without the love of God in my life. It's just a depressing thought. But that is all beside the point, this is a wonderful song with powerful and moving lyrics. I fell in love with it the second i heard it.
well maybe you are taking the song far to conotatively. Its all pretty clear when he writes that "the ship went down in sight of land" and that, "its only at the gate does thomas ask to see his hands". What does that give you? it should be giving you a sense of failure, a sense that you were so close to "reaching land" or "getting pass the gates" but then u failed. its about him and his failure, a betrayal of some sort towards anyone really, maybe god, maybe a girl doesnt really matter,its more than likely a girl because of the questions he raises like do u believe your missing out, and how its lonely at night withone in bed. that accounts to the first part,second part of song is directed towards god. he is telling god how he feels that he is filled with to much evil to belong to his "herd of sheep". that his bright is to sly to hold back all of his dark..sly meaning cowardly. he doesnt feel strong enough to be apart of christ,because he is scared that he will get scared and betray again,this time against god. ...to be continued

Alright, I am a christian. And, most people that dont believe in God around me have accused me of being a christian just because i want to deal with death. If you knew so much about christians, then you would know that we are happy for the ones we knew were going to heaven, and of course we still mourn but its easier to take. My brother is atheist and thinks that the whole christian thing is only for getting over death, and having something to look forward to after death because you dont know any better. I agree that being a christian does make life easier in so many ways including death, and it most definately is something I look forward to!(being in heaven with the highest of high, my father, my creator, my king..!) im not scared of dying because I KNOW what comes after. And for all the non-believers, if you ever just tryed believing in something you cant see, you would experience things you can Never experience of this world, and you would never have another doubt in your mind! The time I was filled with the holy spirit, that feeling was like no other, and it wasnt a nasty nor perverted feeling. And then the first time I heard Gods voice, it was amazing! I cryed for like 30 minutes. So many people think its stupid to be a christian because your believing in something you cant see, but I truely think it takes some intellegence to be able to trust in something you cant see. And to the person that said read a science book, why would i want or need to? the science book, is full of so many things that can be tested untrue, and they can change tomorrow. As for the cross, and who was upon it.. it will never change! and where Im going because of salvation through Jesus Christ will never change.

I think he doesnt really know where hes going after he dies. I think he might have grown up in a religious household and went to church every time there was church and now he doesnt practice his religion anymore. He might not even believe in God too much anymore because he might have gone through so much. So basically he backstabbed God. So I think hes saying "Look, you probably cant trust me because of what Ive done but im confused and need you more than anything. Im scared about where Im going after this and I want to believe in you but I think I will turn on you again.What is there after this life?"

Why do some nasty atheists insist on knocking other people`s beliefs - it is disgusting! honestly guys... i dont even think that is what this song is about. Its about someone who has wronged .. obviously. and is being judged. But the one doing the judging isnt god.
