John Travolta was unable to fight back the tears this week as he appeared on US TV in his first interview since the death of his son Jett in January.

Travolta took a tissue from his pocket to wipe away tears on several occasions as he appeared with Ellen DeGeneres and thanked fans for their support during the toughest year of his life.

"I just want to take one moment to thank each and every one of you throughout this country, throughout the world, for all your support and all your love for our family. Thank you very much," Travolta said.

John Travolta said he is getting daily Scientology counselling for his grief, in his first interview since son Jett's sudden death.

The actor, who has had to relive the January incident for an extortion trial in the Bahamas, said the family have “our own way” of trying to heal from the tragedy.

One of the highest-profile members of the church of Scientology, he is known to have turned to his faith in the aftermath of the death.

In a new interview, Travolta said the family have had almost daily religious counselling sessions.

A jury that was dissolved in the John Travolta extortion case in the Bahamas was set to convict the alleged blackmailers, it was revealed.

The jury had a vote tally of six-to-three that would have returned a guilty verdict for the accused, Pleasant Bridgewater and Tarino Lightbourne, at the time a mistrial was declared, according to a RadarOnline exclusive.

The judge, however, was forced to declare a mistrial when the verdict appeared to be pre-empted on television in what now appears to have been a political stunt.

John Travolta is stunned and “upset” his Bahamas extortion case has been declared a mistrial, his lawyer has revealed.

The heartbroken star is also thought to be distressed he will have to return to the island to relive his son's death once again.

Jett Travolta died in the Bahamas aged 16 in January following a seizure at the family's home on the island nation.

Pleasant Bridgewater, a former member of the Bahamian Senate, is accused of trying to negotiate a £15 million payout for paramedic Tarino Lightbourne in exchange for not selling stories suggesting Travolta was at fault over the death.

They are both charged with extortion.

A Bahamanian judge has declared a mistrial in the case of two people accused of trying to extort money from John Travolta, ordering a retrial at a later date.

Justice Anita Allen declared the mistrial after a televised speech by a politician appeared to be an improper leak from the jury room.

"The dilemma that we face is great. I am erring on the side of caution. Justice must be transparent," Allen said.

Paramedic Tarino Lightbourne and politician Pleasant Bridgewater, pictured, are accused of trying to extort $25 million from the actor over documents relating to Lightbourne's transport of his son, Jett, who died in January while the family was on vacation.

Jurors in a Bahamas trial for the alleged extortion of actor John Travolta were urged not to focus on the efforts of the star's legal team to catch the suspects red-handed.

Paramedic Tarino Lightbourne and former Bahamas senator Pleasant Bridgewater are charged with conspiracy to extort £17.2million (US$28million) from Travolta by threatening to go public with documents relating to his teenage son's sudden death on the island in January.

Defence lawyers argued Lightbourne and Bridgewater were set up by Travolta's legal team in tape recordings that were made. In closing arguments, Bridgewater's attorney Murrio Ducille urged jurors to "set my people free". He has calle .....

A man accused of blackmailing John Travolta allegedly claimed he wanted $25m to become the Bahamian Robin Hood.

Tarino Lightbourne told Travolta's lawyers in taped meetings that he wanted the cash from the Hollywood star so he could give it away to charities.

Prosecutors played an audio recording and two secret videotapes as the extortion trial continues in the Bahamas.

In one video, Travolta's attorney Michael McDermott asked Lightbourne why he wanted the cash, allegedly to keep secret medical documents relating to the death of Travolta's son Jett.

The jury in the extortion trial involving John Travolta watched a video of a lawyer for the star and a former Bahamas senator discussing an alleged blackmail attempt.

The tape was taken by police via a hidden camera. It reportedly showed the fomer senator, Pleasant Bridgewater, trying to exact at least $20million from Travolta through the lawyer.

Bridgewater claims in the footage to have in her possession a document from paramedic Tarino Lightbourne that she threatens to make public. The document was a release from duty of care statement Travolta signed when his son was to be transported after suffering a cardiac arrest in the Bahamas on January 2. The boy, Jett, 16, late .....

John Travolta feared he would be made to look 'culpable' for son Jett's death if he didn't pay up $25m to alleged extortionists.

The Hollywood star told a jury in the Bahamas he was horrified when he discovered the alleged blackmail plot, days after 16-year-old Jett died at their vacation home in January.

Asked what he had been afraid of if he had not paid the money demanded from him, Travolta said: "Stories that would imply that the death of my son was intentional, and that I was culpable in some way. The demand was for $25m."

John Travolta is expected to take the stand at a $25m extortion trial in the Bahamas next week.

The Hollywood legend is set to give evidence against paramedic Tarino Lightbourne and Bahamian politician Pleasant Bridgewater, who are accused of trying to blackmail him over the death of his 16-year-old son Jett in January this year.

Lightbourne was part of an emergency medical team that drove Jett to the hospital. He is accused alongside former senator and attorney Bridgewater, who resigned her position after charges were filed.
