If I could write a letter to me
And send it back in time to myself at 17
First, I'd prove it's me by saying look under your bed
There's a Skoal can and a "Playboy" no one else would know you hid
And then I'd say I know it's tough
When you break up after seven months
And yeah, I know you really liked her and it just don't seem fair
But all I can say is pain like that is fast and it's rare
And oh, you got so much going for you, going right
But I know at 17 it's hard to see past Friday night
She wasn't right for you and still you feel like there's a knife
Sticking out of your back and you're wondering if you'll survive
But you'll make it through this and you'll see
You're still around to write this letter to me
At the stop sign at Tomlinson and 8th
Always stop completely, don't just tap your brakes
And when you get a date with Bridget make sure the tank is full
On second thought, forget it, that one turns out kind a cool
Each and every time you have a fight
Just assume you're wrong and Dad is right
And you should really thank Ms. Brinkley, she spends so much extra time

It's like she sees the diamond underneath and she's polishing you 'till you shine
And oh, you got so much going for you, going right
But I know at 17 it's hard to see past Friday night
Tonight's the bonfire rally but you're staying home instead
Because if you fail algebra, Mom and Dad'll kill you dead
But trust me you'll squeak by and get a C
And you're still around to write this letter to me
You got so much up ahead, you'll make new friends
You should see your kids and wife
And I'd end by saying have no fear
These are nowhere near the best years of your life
I guess I'll see you in the mirror when you're a grown man
P.S., go hug Aunt Rita every chance you can
And oh, you got so much going for you, going right
But I know at 17 it's hard to see past Friday night
I wish you'd study Spanish, I wish you'd take a typing class
I wish you wouldn't worry, let it be
I'd say have a little faith and you'll see
If I could write a letter to me, to me

my favorite part of this song iswhen it says "these are nowhere near the best years of your life." I'm 15 and a sophomore and every once in a while I actually feel really sad because I feel my high school years, which are supposed to be the greatest 4 years of my life, always seem to go by too quickly, and i just can't always absorb all the good times I have. But listening to this song reminds me that after high school, my life will still go on and i'll have even better experiences to look forward to.

Trust me, life gets much better than high school. I'm not sure who ever came up with high school being the best years of our life, but they must have had a really sad life.
You have a lot better things to look forward to, but do enjoy it while you can!

I want to work with teenagers- preferably in adolescent medicine, and I basically want to tell them everything this song says. They should always remember that they have alot going for them, and they can make their lives what they want. It really upsets me when I hear about teenagers (and all kids for that matter) dying because of a stupid mistake. I am going to become an emt next year and one aspect of the job i dont look forward to is seeing kids get killed. Its going to get me every time. This song is great.

That is so sweet! My English teacher used to work as a physical therapist, and at one time she was dealing with burn victims, and one girl was 14, and she got burned because she broke up with her boyfriend, and he tried to burn her out of her house. She had third degree burns all over her body...she lived, but the creep that did it to her is hopefully rotting in jail right now. It is sad to see kids throw their lives away because they are angry. I wish you the best of luck. I hope you help a lot of kids, and hopefully you'll prevent many kids dying.

I can't find the "Submit Correction" link, but the last line of the first verse is off a little. It should read, "There's a Skoal can and a Playboy noone else would know you hid."

Loved the song as I too have a son graduating this year.It makes me cry but at the same time brings me back to when I was in high school. Glad someone in country writes songs for teens too, not just us parents.Keep on keeping country misic alive.!
