This is not about any specific religion. It is about the idea of dieing alone and the possibility of the lack of afterlife and the existential loneliness attached to that idea. I have trouble with the idea of reading the Bible for pleasure when it could just as easily be just about any serious literature and provoke the same feelings and ideas.

ok ok ok you guys that think this song is about love are stupid let me break this down. "i confess i was lost in the pages of a BOOK, full of DEATH, reading how well die alone, and IF WERE GOOD, we're laid to rest anywhere we want to go." -he is reading the BIBLE. "in your house i long to be room by room patiently ill wait for you there like a stone ill wait for you there alone"- here he isn't speaking to or about someone he loves. he is talking to 'god' which he later indicates is something he is not sure he believes in but wants to. the "house" is heaven, and that is where he wants to be. at death he will "wait for you there",meaning wait for god there, like a stone, "wait for you there alone", he says alone here which is the most powerful word in this song. him saying alone means that he doesn't believe there will be a god at death because he says he will be waiting alone. "and on my deathbed I will pray to the gods and the angels like a pagan to anyone who will take me to heaven"-on his deathbed, he will pray to anyone or anything that is out there, like a pagan, or someone who is open minded to any religion or being, that can save him. and at the very end "i will wonder on" means he will never be sure. now that you know what i strongly believe he means in this song, please give me your insight on anything you think i may have left out and email me at miketheeripper@yahoo.
