All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for the daily races
Going no where, going no where
Their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression, no expression
Hide my head I wanna drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, no tomorrow
And I find I kind of funny, I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you, I find it hard to take
When people run in circles its a very, very
Mad world, mad world
Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy birthday, happy birthday
And I feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen, sit and listen
Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me, no one knew me
Hello teacher tell me what's my lesson
Look right through me, look right through me
SONG DEFINTION;
this song is a pestimistic man's somewhat true view on our world. he believes we are like robots doing the same things everyday (school, work) for pointless reasons. we all conform to society, doing what is happening around us. no one searches for thier goals. its mad because they all have hopes of happiness but they are robots and search for happiness in all the wrong places. they hope it comes to them they dont go after it. its a crazy deal. we should all go after dreams and refuse to live our life pointlessly. do what makes us happy. no more conformity
SONG DEFINTION:
this song is a pestimistic man's somewhat true view on the world. He blieves we live like robots conformed to the society around. we take what is given and we dont go after dreams. He sees how people do the same thing everyday, work, school and dont live. but somehow we still do look for happiness even though we are like robots.but we look for it in all the wrong places. people dont go after what they love. and this is crazy because we are like robots yet we r looking for emotion beyond our control. once people realize what life is really about it wont be such a mad world
This song really is beautiful, and I am grateful for having seen that fantastic movie, Donnie Darko, or I would've never discovered this song. I actually want that whole soundtrack. The song, in my opinion, is merely about conforming. It's about the unfortunate fact that society forces us to conform to what is percieved to be right and acceptable in this world. The lyrics simply express how...unfortunate that is, along with a bit of sarcasm. And when applying the song with the movie, the lyrics fit in correctly with certain scenes and situations. Take the entire Jim Cunningham part in the movie. And, yes, it does indeed make the scene in which Donnie dies sad, so, all in all, very great. =]
you guys have to check out the evergreen terrance version it more accurately portrays the song in a rebellious, defiant manner. it is a soft way of saying "screw the system it sucks" mindless zombies & programed robots tehehe
The best way to understand what the artist was thinking about, is through the music video. The music video is a repsentation of what the songs lyrics mean to the artist. Now this is not so with all Muscians, however, Gary Jules' MV you can see what he means through everything.
However, personal rep. would show to me that, the world is unfair to those who think outside the box. If you notice in daily news or what not, most people who think differently are cast aside by society. When Christianity was first becoming a major thing, the Romans killed many who were christians, and many who were believed to be. So a course to follow through personal thinking is: The world is unfair to those cast aside by Society. But there is always hope in our dreams that someday we will be met with peace of mind and peace of body.
Haha, philosopher01, that was a great translation in my opninion, and the best one I've heard so far. No wonder you're called "phiosopher" xDD
I heard about this song from a friend- No... I can hardly call her that...
Um... From a person who has gone through hell bc of emotional problems (in which she holds me responsible) [[reply to this if you really wanna know]] and through hospitals bc she's tried to make her dreams of dying come true...
Whenever I hear/read these lyrics, I think about her bc these lyrics are her.
Anyway, short sad life story part finished, I love this song! ^.^
Philosopher01 is the most accurate in my opinion. He took the words out of my head and wrote them for me. Good dong but i believe it's a remake from another band. His is a lot more "emo" than the other band which had the sound of a happy song but the lyrics being drab. Gary did a much better job than the other band, which i forget their name.
Heh, I'm nuts about this song. And the movie was weird / interesting / addicting too. I have, like, all the songs from the Donnie Darko Soundtrack in my iTunes. :P
i think it's more about how life get wilder and painful every time we grow up ... or is it so wild but our lovely childhood is preventing seeing the ugly side ??
he saw that his dying dream is the best because he find his rest in death ... ( which is perfect for a sad song .. but never for life )

i disagree with all of you, the whole song is about how life doesnt measure up to what it could be. "familiar faces, worn out places" isnt even a metaphor, its the same old same old people and events. "bright and early for the daily races" is trying to get ahead, which is used as irony because you cant get ahead in a race that goes nowhere. "tears filling up their glasses and hide my head i wanna drown my sorrow" is the realization of the pointlessness of the way we live.

"enlargen your world is towards the end of the song, and it is ment to tell everyone that it isnt too late to brake the monotany of the world in which we inhabit
I completely agree with chaser26. chaser i think that the "dreams in which im dying" represent our dreams, our desires and aspirations. many of which can only be achieved in heaven. So although he is "living" in a madd world he feels more "alive" when he experiences heaven through the only way he knows how death,, but not so much in the physical sense. Its much more about the death/rejection/leaving society behind. So hes dead to the world for his rejection of conformity but alive in the sense that living life on purpose for God is the only way to truly live.

wanna hear whats sad? Monday (mar 31, 2008)In Colorado Springs this guy killed himself as the police were walking up to his door to question him about the whereabouts of his girlfirend. This song is on his myspace. His last log in was the same day. His girlfriend is still missing and being searched for. How heartbreaking.
Ha, well banyan, more like an ominous deep lavender rabbit with a skeleton face, but it's all rabbity in the end. :P
That movie was Donnie Darko, and it is one of my favorite movies of all time.
The song was originally written and performed by 80's new wave band Tears for Fears

Embrace your sadness. It reminds us we are alive. The absence of sadness is also the absence of love.
