A crypt next to Marilyn Monroe's grave is being auctioned off

A crypt above where Marilyn Monroe is buried in Los Angeles is expected to make millions when it goes up for auction later this month.


Bidding for the marble mausoleum crypt will start at US$500,000 and will begin on October 19 on AuctionCause.com, according to organiser Eric Gazin.


A bid of US$4.6 million was previously accepted for the space at the Westwood Village Memorial Park back in August when Elsie Poncher tried to auction her late husband's crypt.


But that fell through and the space is available again on an eBay-style auction that will require a one to five per cent refundable deposit, based on the bid.

The crypt above Marilyn Monroe has not been sold after all.


Los Angeles widow Elsie Poncher, owner of the crypt that lies above that of Monroe, said she received only false offers on e-Bay for the crypt that houses her husband's body. He bought the crypt above Monroe's at Pierce Bros. Westwood Village Memorial Park from baseball great Joe DiMaggio, who was divorced from Monroe.


Poncher's bid to sell the nearly famous crypt made headlines all around the world. Poncer said she needed the proceeds of a sale to pay off the mortgage on a house that she wants to leave without fuss to her children.


The winning bidder was allegedly from Japan and offering $4.6 million.
