Matchbox 20 Biography

Rob Thomas (lead vocalist, born Feb 14, 1972), Brian Yale (bassist born Nov 14, 1968), Kyle Cook (lead guitarist born Aug 29, 1975), Adam Gaynor (guitarist born Nov 26, 1964) and Paul Doucette (drummer born Aug 22, 1972), make up Matchbox Twenty. The band was formed in 1996. Prior to the formation, Doucette, Yale, and Thomas were members of the band: “Tabitha’s Secret”. The said band, however, split up with reasons still unknown up to the present. The name Matchbox Twenty was actually taken from a jersey of one of the customers in the restaurant Doucette used to work for.

Matchbox Twenty’s very first album: “Yourself or Someone Like You” had some of the band’s famous hits like “Push”, “3am”, and “Real World”. "Long Day" was also part of the album, but only became a minor hit. “Push” may actually be considered as the breakthrough song of the band. It did, however, caused some controversy, especially from some feminists who believed that the lyrics of the song pertained to the group’s desire to push people, especially women, around.

The next several years meant consistent touring for the members of Matchbox Twenty. They also developed the habit of drinking like there’s no tomorrow after every concert. In 1998, however, Thomas became a changed man. The main reason is because he got married to Marisol Maldenado, a model. The year after, Thomas co-wrote with Santana, which resulted to “Smooth”, one of 1999’s greatest hit songs. Marisol was even included in the song’s video.

Months passed and Matchbox Twenty started recording “Mad Season”, their sophomore album. During the recording sessions, however, Doucette and Thomas started having problems seeing eye to eye, resulting to Doucette letting go of the group. After just a short while, however, Doucette returned, even joining in recording “The Burn”. Their follow up album (Mad Season), was launched in 2000. It contained a series of successful hits such as “If You’re Gone”, “Bent”, and “Mad Season”. “If You’re Gone” was actually composed by Thomas which he dedicated to his wife.
The album that followed was called: “More Than You Think You Are” with songs like “Disease” which was a collaboration between Mick Jagger and the band, “Unwell” which became a huge hit, and many more. In the first quarter of 2005, Gaynor left the group, again with no confirmed reason behind his decision. The remaining band members then decided to do their own thing (remaining the same up to the present) --- Thomas completed a solo debut, Cook spent time on tour with “The New Left”, Yale without a single word, and Gaynor worked on his solo debut like Thomas.
