Moby Biography

Moby is who you can consider as an artist who believes in “electronic music”. He used to love punk and was even a member of: “The Vatican Commandos”, but he left in 1989 to pursue a career in electronic music. He is an American who’s Richard Melville Hall in real life, born in New York City in September 1965. He uses “Moby” as his stage name in honor of his relative, the author of Moby Dick: Herman Melville.

His track entitled “Go” gave Moby the fame he wanted. “Go” is a track that utilizes the string line from one of Twin Peaks’ theme songs: “Laura Palmer’s Theme”. Moby is also recognized for the following singles: “South Side” (featuring Gwen Stefani), “Next is E”, and the single: “We Are All Made of Stars”. Mody also launched some singles under different names such as: Barracuda, The Brotherhood, Brainstorm/Mindstorm, Voodoo Child, Lopez, and UHF.

A number of songs released by Moby are also found in major films, the most popular of which is “God Moving Over the Face of the Waters”, used in 1995’s Heat. “Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad?” is also a Moby song that was utilized in “Peaceable Kingdom”, a documentary film, where viewers can hear the song during the climax. Moby also introduced, in 1997, “I Like to Score”, a collection of songs that were either used or were inspired by movies.

Moby’s first album was recorded under Elektra Records and was entitled: “Everything Is Wrong”. The album earned a little bit of notoriety and praise. His next album was both electronic and hard rock called: “Animal Rights” recorded in 1996. In 1997 came “I Like to Score.” Both “Animal Rights” and “I Like to Score”, however, were not that successful and ended the partnership between Moby and Elektra Records.

In 1999, Moby finally released a breakthrough album named: “Play” released under V2 Records. A total of 18 songs can be found in the album, with all of them commercially license. For example, the track “Porcelain” can be heard in Nordstrom’s and Bailey’s Irish Cream’s TV commercials. “Play” was indeed Moby’s most successful album.

After two years, Moby started the Area One Festival which was a well-anticipated rock festival on tour that showcases various musical genres. The following year, Moby had his own television show called: “Senor Moby’s House of Music” on MTV which placed more ambiguous electronic music on the spotlight. The show didn’t really last that long on air. Presently, Moby is busy managing his business: “Teany”, a coffee shop/diner in Little Italy in New York.
