Academy of Country Music Awards: Our Song of the Year Predictions (VOTE)
This year's Academy of Country Music Awards (or ACM Awards for short) are right around the corner! These awards are such a huge honor for country artists because their community is so tight-knit but ever gaining in mainstream popularity. This year, we wanted to break down the nominees for Song of the Year, which honors artists, publishers, and composers for their work on hit country songs. Here are the nominees, and don't forget to vote in our poll for your favorite!
Composers: Lee Brice, Liz Rose
Publishers: Cake Taker Music (BMI), Mike Curb Music (BMI), Sony/ATV Tree Publishing (BMI), Sweet Hysteria Music (BMI)"Crazy girl, don't you know that I love you? / I wouldn't dream of going nowhere / Silly woman come here let me hold you / Have I told you lately I love you like crazy, girl?"
Formed in 2000 in Denton, Texas, The Eli Young Band shot to number one on the country music charts for the first time with their hit "Crazy Girl". With the song's music video almost at 10 million views on Youtube, this ballad about one man's love for a crazy girl was one of the biggest country songs this year — so it only makes sense that they were nominated!
Composers: Brett Beavers, Dierks Bentley, Dan Wilson
Publishers: Big White Tracks (ASCAP), Chestnut Barn Music (BMI), Chrysalis Music/BMG Rights (ASCAP), Chrysalis One Songs (BMI)"From the mountains high / To the wave-crashed coast / There's a way to find / Better days, I know"
This is the title-track of Dierks Bentley's seventh album Home and it's all about what the concept of "home" can mean to different people. Bentley and his songwriters were struck by the tragic shooting in their home state of Arizona invoving Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords. The lyrics and subject matter make this song a heartfelt, substantial song that could easily take home the award.
Composers: Dallas Davidson, Dave Haywood, Charles Kelley, Hillary Scott
Publishers: Dwhaywood Music (BMI), EMI Blackwood Music, Inc. (BMI), EMI Foray Music (SESAC), Hillary Dawn Songs (SESAC), Radiobulletspublishing (BMI), String Stretcher Music (BMI), Warner-Tamberlane Publishing Corp. (BMI)"Just a kiss on your lips in the moonlight / Just a touch of the fire burning so bright / And I don't want to mess this thing up / No, I don't want to push too far"
Not only are Lady Antebellum's three members friends, they're also a great songwriting team who penned this romantic ballad in only one day. The lyrics talk about a new love blossoming and how taking things slow helped it to grow into something special. Lead singer Hillary Scott said that writing "Just A Kiss" came so easily that she knew she and her bandmates were meant to be a team.
Composers: Amy Grant, Vince Gill, Dillon O'Brian, Will Owsley
Publishers: Grant Girls Music (ASCAP), Vinny Mae Music (BMI), Willie-O Music (ASCAP)"What's the worst thing that can happen / That's the worst that they can do / Threaten me with Heaven, it's all they can do"
This touching lament by multi-platinum selling, multi-award winning country legend Vince Gill is a goodbye tale to a loved one about what happens when it's his time to pass on. The title came from his stepchild, who was upset that his grandfather suddenly became ill. The grandfather responded with "What are they going to do? Threaten me with heaven?", and alas, the song was born.
Composers: Matraca Berg, Deana Carter
Publishers: Deanaling Music (ASCAP), Hannaberg Music (BMI), Songs of Universal Inc. (BMI), WB Music Corp. (ASCAP)"'Cause you and Tequila make me crazy / Run like poison in my blood / One more night could kill me, baby / One is one too many, one more is never enough"
Kenny Chesney's love-hate ode "You And Tequila" (featuring Grace Potter of Grace Potter and the Nocturnals) compares getting over a lover to giving up alcohol. It's a tender, simply-written tune from the major country star that's been called "exquisite" and also one of the singer's high notes in his career.
Don't forget to tune in for the show on Sunday, April 1 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on CBS!
