Barenaked Ladies Explain Their "Big Bang Theory" Lyrics

The Canadian rock band tells us how their hit TV show theme song came about.

Canadian rock icons Barenaked Ladies are known for writing the theme song to one of TV's most popular shows, The Big Bang Theory, and CBS's series Eye On Music sat down with the band to learn more about about the song came together. The group's singer and co-founder, Ed Robertson, revealed that the inspiration behind writing the track came from Simon Singh's book Big Bang, and the lyrics came to him when they were playing a show in LA and he improvised them onstage. The Big Bang Theory's creators just happened to be in the audience for the gig, and decided right there and then that Barenaked Ladies needed to be the writers of their developing show's theme.

The band was already being considered to write the theme song because of how they pack so many lyrics into one line in a matter of seconds. Just take a look at one of their best hits, "One Week": it's almost a rap, the words are sung so fast!
