deCODED: Fun. — We Are Young (ft. Janelle Monae)
The band Fun. has one of the biggest songs in the world right now, "We Are Young", and we were trying our hardest to figure out what made the tune so likeable — hence the song's feature on deCODED! It might be the catchy melody, or even Janelle Monae's guest appearance, but lyrics are our thing and we're thinkin' that the answer might lie hidden in the words. Let's break down the lyrics, shall we?
Give me a second I
I need to get my story straight
My friends are in the bathroom
Getting higher than the Empire State
Clearly, the band Fun. is all about, well, fun! It seems like the guys are out on the town and letting loose, judging by the fact that the narrator is having trouble thinking and his friends are feeling as high as New York City's legendary Empire State Building!
My lover she's waiting for me
Just across the bar
My seats been taken by some sunglasses
Asking 'bout a scar
Enter the narrator's love interest, who has been hurt in the past by him due to the mention of a scar. The sunglasses represent her attempt to cover up the scar, which sounds as if it could be physical, but poetically it makes sense that the scar is a mental damage.
And I know I gave it to you months ago
I know you're trying to forget
But between the drinks and subtle things
The holes in my apologies
You know I'm trying hard to take it back
The "scar" he left on her, now revealed that it was months ago, proves difficult to forget. He lets her know that he is trying to move on from the incident, despite his drinking, subtleties, and see-through apologies.
So if by the time the bar closes
And you feel like falling down
I'll carry you home
This is his last declaration of love for her, telling her that he'll be by her side no matter what.
We are young
So let's set the world on fire
We can burn brighter
than the sun
The massive chorus is an exclamation to the world that the guys of Fun. know how to have...wait for it...fun! Basically, the narrator wants to forget about the past and focus on the moment right now. Life is too short to worry about your past mistakes — live in the now, dude!
Now I know that I'm not
all that you got
I guess that I
I just thought maybe we could find new ways to fall apart
But our friends are back
So let's raise a toast
Cause I found someone to carry me home
The narrator admits that he's not all that: he's got flaws, like everybody else. The line "new ways to fall apart" is an interesting way to ask somebody to take them back: sometimes relationships fall apart as they go along, and he's just asking her to be with him again and have a relationship that takes that risk. But, their friends spoil their serious moment and suggest a toast, making the song light and happy again.
The world is on my side
I have no reason to run
So will someone come and carry me home tonight
The angels never arrived
but I can hear the choir
so will someone come and carry me home
The narrator wants to take it slow and not rush through their fun together, especially when he has such a good feeling about the night. Angels are a sign of hope, and even though he can't see them, he can hear them, so he knows his lover will be there for him at the end of the night.
Phew! That was a big deCODED! And now for the moment of truth: to define why this song is such a hit. We think it's the idea about being in the moment and focusing on having fun right now, not worrying about what you did in the past.
