deCODED: Gotye - "Somebody That I Used To Know"
Everyone deals with breakups differently. Some people like to keep the specifics very private, while others put all the nitty gritty details out there for everyone to see (Come on, we've all witnessed the "So and So is no longer listed as in a relationship" followed by a slew of antagonistic comments and "Likes"). Between these two breakup camps, Gotye is definitely in the latter. Just glance at his massive hit, "Somebody That I Used To Know" and try not to think "Woah, TMI bro." We've deCODED the song just to show you how bitter this dude is:
Now and then I think of when we were together / Like when you said you felt so happy you could die / I told myself that you were right for me, / But felt so lonely in your company / But that was love and it's an ache I still remember
In the opening lines, Gotye reveals that (like most ex-boyfriends), he reminisces about his ex-girlfriend from time to time, especially when she told him she was "so happy she could die". But judging from the rest of the song's lyrics, it looks like her sentiments for Gotye took a turn for the worse... Uh oh...
You can get addicted to a certain kinda sadness / Like resignation to the end, always the end / So when we found that we could not make sense / Well you said that we would still be friends / But I'll admit that I was glad it was over
He kept telling himself that he was happy in the relationship too, but in reality, he wasn't feeling like himself. His brain and his heart were telling him two different things; an incredibly confusing situation since they're both very trustworthy sources. But after the break-up, he realizes it was the best thing anyway because truth be told, she was kinda wack.
No, you didn't have to stoop so low / Have your friends collect you records / And then change your number / Guess that I don't need that though / Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Okay let's face it, even though he knows that she's not really worth his time, it still hurts to get the cold shoulder!
Now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over / But had me believin it was always something that I'd done / But I don't wanna' live that way, / Reading into every word you say / You said that you could let it go, / and I wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know-oh-oh
One of the (many) great things about this song is that it gives a voice to Gotye's current girlfriend who's totally annoyed with his obsession over his ex! Not only does it give insight to her emotions, but also to how crazy Gotye is to still be thinking about his ex both after she wants nothing to do with him AND he has a new girlfriend!
Yikes, I guess no break-up is safe from awkwardness. Does Gotye's relationship read anything like yours?
