deCODED: Katy Perry - The One That Got Away

The video for Katy Perry's latest single from the album Teenage Dream entitled The One That Got Away was released on Friday (11/11/11!) to much fanfare. We previously saw the trailer for the video where it was revealed that Katy would be getting made up to look like an old woman! We were intrigued by the disguise, not to mention by her dreamy co-star Diego Luna, so we decided to decode the lyrics and post the video for you all to see...

The song starts out with Katy describing some of the best memories of a previous relationship:

Summer after high school when we first met / We make out in your Mustang to Radiohead / And on my 18th birthday we got matching tattoos / Used to steal your parents' liquor and climb to the roof

Then the song changes as she foreshadows what's coming:

Talk about our future like we had a clue / Never plan that one day I'd be losing you

Katy has said she wrote the song "about when you promise someone forever, but you end up not being able to follow through. It's a bittersweet story." The song continues with the chorus:

And in another life I would be your girl / We keep all our promises, be us against the world / And in other life I would make you stay / So I don't have to say you were the one that got away

When she was announcing this song as her next single, Katy said: "Hopefully, the listener learns from hearing it and never has to say they had 'The One' get away." The lyrics continue with advice to anybody who has ever loved another person:

All this money can't buy me a time machine, no / Can't replace you with a million rings, no / I should've told you what you meant to me, whoa / 'Cause now I pay the price

This whole song is a fable, a warning for people that if you've found the one, tell them how much they mean to you and never let them go.
