Everyone's heard the old adage "What doesn't kill you makes your stronger," right? It's something our parents or teachers told us, so we'd toughen up a bit and maybe learn something from our hardships. Now the expression has been turned into a hit by the first American Idol: Kelly Clarkson! If her songs are any indication, she's been through her fair share of heartbreaks and bad relationships, but the song "Stronger" puts a positive spin on that and proposes that because she's been through so much, she's a stronger more independent person. That's the spirit, Kel! Let's take a closer look at the lyrics...
You know the bed feels warmer / Sleeping here alone / You know I dream in color / And do the things I want
In the first few lines of the song, Kelly is saying that without her ex, the bed feels a lot warmer. She's able to dream more vividly (maybe in life just as much as in sleep), and do whatever she wants with nothing to hold her back.
You think you got the best of me / Think you had the last laugh / Bet you think that everything good is gone / Think you left me broken down / Think that i'd come running back / Baby you don't know me, cause you're dead wrong
Her ex thinks she's suffering without him, that she wants him back, but he couldn't be any more wrong. The lyrical themes of this song sound a little like her first hit "Since U Been Gone" (But since you've been gone / I can breathe for the first time / I'm so movin' on, yeah yeah / Thanks to you now I get what I want) where the bad relationship was a learning experience.
What doesn't kill you makes you stronger / stand a little taller / Doesn't mean I'm lonely when I'm alone. / What doesn't kill you makes a fighter / Footsteps even lighter / Doesn't mean I'm over cause you're gone
In the chorus, Kelly drives home the point that she's not lonely, contrary to another one of her songs, her life doesn't suck without her ex. All in all, the message here is that another person doesn't make you, you determine who you are and how you feel about a situation. You can choose to see it in a positive light or a negative one. Words to live by!
