deCODED: Sinead O'Connor - Nothing Compares 2 U

When Sinead O'Connor recorded a little-known Prince song called "Nothing Compares 2 U" it took off. The song made it to #1 on the charts in sixteen countries and was an instant classic for music fans in the 90's. Known by many as one of the best breakup songs, "Nothing Compares 2 U" is a sad tale of the depression that can follow after a tough split from the person you loved. In honor of St. Patrick's day (coming up on Saturday, March 17th!) let's Decode Irish singer Sinead O'Connor's greatest hit...
It's been seven hours and fifteen days / Since u took your love away / I go out every night and sleep all day / Since you took your love away / Since you been gone I can do whatever I want / I can see whomever I choose / I can eat my dinner in a fancy restaurant

She starts off talking about the depressing aspects of the breakup. It's never a good feeling to sleep all day and realize it's dark again. But on the other hand, she's independent again and can take herself on dates. It's always nice to treat yourself to some "me" time.
But nothing / I said nothing can take away these blues / 'Cause nothing compares / Nothing compares to you

Even thought she might partly be enjoying her independence, no amount of alone-time can compare to having her lover back. The chorus just solidifies the song as a sad, desperate breakup ballad.
It's been so lonely without you here / Like a bird without a song / Nothing can stop these lonely tears from falling / Tell me baby where did I go wrong

A part of her is missing without her love. She wants to know why he left and what she did to cause it.
All the flowers that you planted, mama / In the back yard / All died when you went away

In the famous music video for "Nothing Compares 2 U" Sinead O'Connor cries near the end of singing the song. The tears were reportedly genuine as Sinead said this line of lyrics made her think of her relationship with her abusive mother. Here's the iconic music video:
