Does Pharrell's "Happy" Really Have A Positive Meaning?

We're breaking down the lyrics to the first single off Pharrell's upcoming 2nd record 'G I R L'.

Big news for Pharrell fans (which is pretty much everybody, right?) -- the singer/songwriter/producer extraordinaire has announced the title of his long-overdue second album, G I R L, and it'll be released on March 3rd. We thought that his uplifting hit "Happy" was simply made for the Despicable Me 2 soundtrack, but it turns out it's the first single off the ten-track release due in just a couple of weeks. But what are the lyrics to "Happy" really about? Have you ever sat down and really looked at them? We thought we'd do that for you and decode the lyrics to Pharrell's groovy tune:

It might seem crazy what I'm about to say
Sunshine she's here, you can take away
I'm a hot air balloon, I could go to space
With the air, like I don't care baby by the way

The song's first verse has Pharrell delivering us a bit of a word jumble with his lyrics. But it makes sense, with the beginning line: he does sound kind of crazy! But he doesn't care what you think, he's just gonna be random when it comes to how he feels and we're going to take it.

Because I'm happy
Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof
Because I'm happy
Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth
Because I'm happy
Clap along if you know what happiness is to you
Because I'm happy
Clap along if you feel like that's what you wanna do

The song gets playfully cheerful in its chorus, especially with the line "if you feel like a room without a roof". That essentially means you have no limits: you can jet off and join Pharrell in space if "that's what you wanna do"!

Here come bad news talking this and that
Yeah, give me all you got, don't hold back
Yeah, well I should probably warn you I'll be just fine
Yeah, no offence to you, don't waste your time

This is Pharrell's way of saying that he feels happy and there's not a darn thing you can do about it. Go ahead, dwell on the bad things in life...he's not listening!

Happy, bring me down
Can't nothing, bring me down
Love is too happy to bring me down

It looks like the song is simple enough to define, and the overall theme is that when you believe in the power of love and happiness, nothing can bring you down. No wonder everybody loves this song: what a message!
