Go Behind Kendrick Lamar's Verse on Imagine Dragons' "Radioactive"
The now-famous GRAMMY pairing of the rock band and the rapper has Kendrick laying down a hot new verse.
It's safe to say that out of all the moments at the 2014 GRAMMYs, Imagine Dragons and Kendrick Lamar's performance of "Radioactive" mixed with "m.A.A.d city" was definitely one of the most memorable. Heck, it even got Taylor Swift out of her seat to dance! Now, the unlikely pairing of the alt-rockers and the rapper has Lamar adding a verse on "Radioactive (Remix)", and like the emcee himself, it's a dramatic and powerful set of lines.
Of course, since lyrics are kinda our thing, we wanted to delve deeper into Kendrick's new verse for his new buds Imagine Dragons. Care to break down the words with us? Read on, dear readers:
Bury me alive, bury me with pride
Bury me with berries, that forbidden fruit and cherry wine
Thank you berry much, but tonight's my night and I'm Barry Bonds
Swingin' for the fences, barbaric Kendrick in idle time
We're loving this stanza because of Kendrick's subtle "berry" references he stacks in each line: "bury", to "berry", to "barbaric". He also compares himself to Barry Bonds, the pro-baseball player who's been known for some epic home-runs.
Everything in life's subject to change, change whip, change grind
Change clothes, change opinions, right before I change my mind
I don't really know yah business, been in there since I was bendin' Lego blocks
Now you tell the world about me, dry snitch
Kendrick references how at any moment, anything can change, whether its something as small as changing your mind to a big, bold move like changing the world. The line "dry snitch" is a great reference to his fans: the term means accidentally giving dirt on somebody to the police, but in this case, his fans are positively snitching on him. They're promoting his music for him!
Tater tots on my shotgun, now I gotta pop one at the stars
Sky's the limit, I gotta finish as the first rapper on Mars
Mark my word, I'mma make my mark, even when they start their Martial Law
Even when these Martians alienate, my mental state is still at heart
"Tater tots", hey Kendrick? He's actually referring to a terrifying practice where gun-wielders have put potatoes on the front of their weapons to silence them. Lamar's metaphorically shooting down the other rappers in his field (career-wise) and wants to make it to the top.
Look in my eyes, tell me I died, tell me I tried, to compromise
Tell me you love me, tell me that I, don't give a f*** and can barely decide
Wishin' good luck on my enemies, all of my energy go to the almighty God
I could drown in a bottle of Hennessy, f*** your amenities, I'm gettin' better with time
Are you a Kendrick hater? He wants you to look him dead in the eye and tell him, and then laugh right at you because he doesn't care what you think at all. In fact, he wishes his haters luck, because according to Kendrick, he's only getting better and more powerful with age.
