Have U Heard?: Shad

After watching Canadian rapper Shad's (real name Shadrach Kabango) at the Live At Squamish festival in beautiful British Columbia, I gotta say — I'm shad-dicted to his music. Get it, get it? LOLOLOL.

Shad was born in Kenya and raised in London, Ontario, and in typical Canadian fashion, he's fluent en francais (French, of course). He's been compared to rappers k-os and Common, so if y'all are fans of said artists, I'm preeeeetty sure you're gonna love Shad. Even if you don't like hip-hop! Even if you don't like MUSIC! (Jokes, jokes.)

The reason why I connect with Shad's tunes is the humble lyrics he thinks up. Naturally, lots of hip-hoppers wanna spit rhymes about how awesome they are, and that turns me off from time to time. Listening to Shad rap lines like this is pretty down-to-earth and even a little endearing:

I didn't promise you a rose garden
Along with the sunshine
There's gotta be some rain sometimes
I beg your pardon, I didn't promise you a rose garden
Along with the sunshine
There's gotta be some rain sometimes
~ Rose Garden

But my absolute FAVE track by Shaddy boy is "The Old Prince Lives At Home". It's the most anti-rap song I think I've ever heard in my life — it's about pinching pennies, for goodness sake! Referencing The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, the song mentions money-saving tips like coupon-clipping, avoiding the dentist, and living off popcorn in your student dorm. P.S. — love the neon striped shirt! I wanna get my nails did like that...

P.P.S. — is that maid at 0:52 Kreayshawn?
