Now in its fourth week, Occupy Wall Street, a series of demonstrations in New York City protesting social and economic inequality, and the influence of money and corporate greed on government, has been getting a lot of attention. Essentially, the 99% of people who don't hold the majority of the nation's wealth are protesting the 1% that do. Hence the slogan you make have seen kicking around: "We are the 99%"
Various musicians have come out to show their support for the demonstrators, most notably Talib Kweli, Immortal Technique, and Anti-Flag. But the one musician that has garnered the most attention didn't even perform.
Much to everyone's surprise and/or chagrin, Kanye "I live by two words, f**k you, pay me" West popped up at Occupy Wall Street over the weekend. The Louis Vuitton Don (net worth $70 million) arrived with his plus 1, Russell Simmons (net worth $325 million) to show support for the...99%? Right? Uhh..yeah, sure guys.
Russell and Yeezy were clearly lost behind enemy lines and we've got the lyrics to prove it. Here are the top 5 lyrics showcasing why Kanye was rooting for the wrong team:
La la la la / Wait till I get my money right / I had a dream I can buy my way to Heaven / When I awoke, I spent that on a necklace
Well if tonight's the night, pop bottles, f*** models / Spend money 'til you broke, my n**ga live your life
You short minded n**gas' thoughts is Napoleon / My furs is Mongolian, my ice brought the goalies in / Now I embody every characteristic of the egotistic / He knows, he's so f**kin' gifted
They say I'm crazy, well, I'm 'bout to go dumb again / They aint see me cause I pulled up in my other Benz / Last week I was in my other other Benz
Sure he's all money, cash, cars, but let's not forget a time when some of Kanye's plaques still said Kayne and the rap was still eating his fair share of humble pie:
I say f*ck the police, that's how I treat 'em / We buy our way out of jail, but we can't buy freedom / We buy a lot clothes but we don't really need 'em / Things we buy to cover up what's inside / 'Cause they made us hate ourself and love they wealth
So before we rag on this cash king, let's not forget his small beginnings! Thanks for the support Yeezy.
