My 3 Songs: Lyrics That Remind Us Of Lost Love
Katy Perry's music video trailer for "The One That Got Away" (full length set for a November 11 release) came out recently and it has our hearts feeling all achey breaky. The trailer caps in at just 36 seconds, but the lyrics give us the full disclosure:
Summer after high school when we first met / We make out in your Mustang to Radiohead / And on my 18th birthday we got matching tattoos / Used to steal your parents' liquor and climb to the roof
Sounds like a fairly innocent puppy love scenario at first blush, but we all know how these things end...
And in another life, I would make you stay / So I don't have to say you were the one that got away / The one that got away
Bummer, dude. Too bad about those matching tattoos.
Okay but actually, we can all relate to that feeling of lost love and ~*the one that got away*~. So to make K. Perry (and ourselves) feel better about those people who still to this day pull our heart strings, we're dedicating this week's 3 songs to love stories gone wrong.
3. Back To December - Taylor Swift (Submitted by Mizhar Mustafa Kamal)
It turns out freedom ain't nothing but missing you / Wishing I'd realized what I had when you were mine / I go back to December, turn around and make it alright / I go back to December all the time
With breakups comes dwelling. Lots and lots of dwelling. Dwelling on the past, dwelling on what we think we did wrong and how we wish we could go back in time and change it all. But until NASA shows up with a time machine, dwelling is pretty pointless. So as comforting as self-pity can be, sometimes you just gotta move on. "Que sera, sera" as they say.
2. Valentine's Day - Linkin Park (Submitted by Thomas Ochang)
So now you're gone / And I was wrong / I never knew what it was like / To be alone on a Valentine's Day
For some reason a lot of people think that being alone on Valentine's Day is like, the ultimate tragedy, but there's actually a silver lining: you're saving so much money! You don't need to buy yourself a new outfit, you don't need to buy flowers/candy/a watch/whatever for your significant other, and you don't have to pay to eat dinner at a restaurant with an overpriced set menu.
So, what's it like to be alone on Valentine's Day? Frugal.
1. Here Without You - 3 Doors Down (Submitted by Rob Allen)
I'm here without you baby, but you're still on my lonely mind / I think about you baby, and I dream about you all the time / I'm here without you baby, but you're still with me in my dreams / And tonight, there's only you and me
Written about singer Brad Arnold's now ex-wife, "Here Without You" is the mother of all breakup songs. It's just so straightforward and to the point, no crazy metaphors to decipher, just the basics: We broke up. I'm alone. I miss you. Fin.
While breakups can make you feel totally alone, just a quick perusal through our most popular lyrics pages will reveal heaps of songs about heartbreak, and you realize, 'Hey, everybody goes through this!' It's just a part of life we all need to accept. Just keep ya head up, stay positive, and keep in mind that without breakups, we wouldn't have any music from Taylor Swift or Adele.
