Playlistin': 5 Songs That Should Have Been Singles In 2011

There was a lot of great music last year (we've talked about our favorite albums of 2011 before) which meant great singles. But there were a few songs that we really wanted to see get some airtime that didn't end up being released as singles. Hopefully 2012 will see these 5 songs released for all to enjoy as much as we did last year.

5. Nicki Minaj - Roman's Revenge

I am not Jasmine, I am Aladdin / So far ahead, these bums is laggin' / See me in that new thing, bums is gaggin / I'm startin' to feel like a dungeon dragon

Nicki had a handful of awesome singles in 2011 — we're looking at you, "Moment 4 Life", "Right Thru Me", "Super Bass" — but we gotta say, we could have done without the tinged single "Check It Out". The replacement? The amazing ode "Roman's Revenge" featuring an ol-skool sounding Eminem. Sure, the radio would have to bleep out a handful of swears, but the song is so hard-hitting and features both Nicki and Eminem at their finest. Can you imagine the music video? *faints*

4. Jay-Z and Kanye West - That's My B*tch

"How can somethin' so gangsta be so pretty in pictures? / Ripped jeans and a blazer and some Louboutin slippers / Uh, Picasso was alive he woulda made her / That's right n*gga Mona Lisa can't fade her"

While "Otis" and "N*ggas In Paris" are both fantastically swagged out, infectious songs (especially in the latter case, when it gets played 10 times in a row), it was "That's My B*tch" that found a permanent home in our ears when we first spun Watch The Throne. Featuring Elly Jackson of La Roux, and Kanye's personal buddy, Justin Vernon of Bon Iver, "That's My B*tch" is romantic without being too cheesy. Oh yeah, and did we mention it's catchy as hell? The song acts as an ode to Jay and Ye's lady loves; Beyonce, and whoever Yeezy happens to bring to the club or make out with on a balcony. Decked out with luxurious designer name drops and a who's who of the art world's most revered, "That's My B*tch" is a sonic force to be reckoned with only if you're prepared to lose.

3. Drake - Under Ground Kings

Bridge over troubled water, / Ice in my muddy water / Rich off a mixtape, got rich off a mixtape

The singles off Drake's new album Take Care were all really good, but one I would have liked to see get some play is this ethereal rap song, Under Ground Kings. It follows the recurring theme of lots of Drake's lyrics of his disillusionment with fame, relationships, and wealth but just sounds really fresh. We think if this song is released as a single in 2012 it will take off.

2. Robyn - Stars 4-Ever

"I can be right there next to you / No matter where in the world you are / I got you right here next to me / Forever connected through the stars"

Robyn had a HUGE year in 2011. Her two singles "Dancing On My Own" and "Call Your Girlfriend" slowly crept onto everybody's iPod, and her infamous backwards flip during her performances was mimicked by dancers and non-dancers alike. Topping off her big year by performing on SNL, we wish she had released just one more single: the fun and bouncy "Stars 4-Ever". We want to see more from these adorably catchy pop star!

1. Britney Spears - Trip To Your Heart

"Spread my wings out into the dark / I'll fly away on a trip to your heart / Break these chains that keep us apart / I'll fly away on a trip to your heart"

With only three singles this year, which was a surprise considering the amount from fellow pop stars Lady Gaga and Beyonce, we didn't think BritBrit got enough attention in 2011. This radio-friendly, light-hearted jam would have shot up the pop charts in an instant. Maybe she'll release it in the upcoming months...?

What songs do you wish you heard on the radio/saw music videos for in 2011? What songs do you think will be big in 2012?
